Hot plates are an essential part of every kitchen equipment. However, it does pose a potential threat to safety and being aware of its hazards decreases the risk for personal injuries. Foremost, touching the surface of the hot plate is a burn hazard. It will definitely burn you. For older units, there is an electric spark hazard for either the on-off switch of the bimetallic thermostat used to regulate the temperature. Therefore, be extra cautious when using hot plates since you are usually cook food directly on a hot plate your hands will be closer to the source of the heat. It is recommended to use tongs to grab anything off the plate and wear oven mitts when grabbing or turning the food with the tongs. Lastly, unplug the unit when not in use.
