Lead-based paints have pigments composed of lead that is used to paint surfaces. Lead is added to paint in order to accelerate the drying process, increase durability, resist moisture that causes corrosion to achieve and maintain a fresh appearance. As such, lead that is ingested is fatal and leads to poisoning. However, it does not present a hazard for as long as the paint is not chipping off, flaking, pulverized or sanded into dust.
