The People’s Republic of China is a country in East Asia, and is the world’s most populous country, with over 1.5 billion people. It is also one of the top five biggest countries by land mass. While it is one of the earliest civilizations, China only recently opened its doors to foreigners, with major tourist relations starting during the 1970s. It is a one party socialist republic and is one of the few remaining Communist states. Human rights groups and political activists have denounced and criticized the Chinese government of human rights abuses, suppression of religious and ethnic minorities, censorship and mass surveillance. Many remember the famous Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. Unfortunately, not much improvement has happened, although a lot of international protests have been continuously launched. Yet China remains an economic and military power. However, tourism has flourished over the years, and many visitors are curious to experience the attractions the country has to offer, including the landscape, the cuisine, and the history of one of the oldest surviving civilizations.
