San Francisco or the City by the Bay, is a beautiful, hilly place in Northern California. It is colloquially known also as San Fran, The City, or Frisco. It has a rich history, and is a cultural, financial, and commercial center of Northern California. It was founded in 1776, when colonists from Spain established Presidio of San Francisco at the Golden Gate, and Mission San Francisco de Asis a few miles away. It was named after St. Francis of Assisi. It has had a long LGBT friendly history, being the home of the first lesbian-rights organization in the US, Daughters of Bilitis. It also is where the first openly gay person ran for public office in the country. It is one of the more popular destinations for gay tourists internationally, but there are a lot of other reasons to visit the City by the Bay. However, tourists should also be aware that somethings just should not be done when visiting San Francisco.
