The Commonwealth of the Bahamas is a country the consists of about 700 islands, islets, and cays, located north of Cuba, and southeast of the US state of Florida. Nassau is the capital city located in the island of New Providence. The country became an independent Commonwealth realm in 1973, after being a British crown colony in 1718. Slavery in the Bahamas was abolished in 1834, and it became a haven for freed African slaves. Today, 90% of the population are Afro-Bahamians.
The Bahamas relies heavily on tourism to generate most of its economic activity. Offshore international financial services comes next, and it is the territory with the most offshore companies.
