Most women would have a tube or a tin of Vaseline either at the bottom of a purse, in a jar hanging around the medicine cabinet, or in a jar sitting on a cabinet near the sink. But what is Vaseline? The origins of it started way back in 1859, when Robert Chesebrough learned of a substance that was called “rod wax” by the oil field workers of Titusville, Pennsylvania. This residue was a by-product of oil extraction, and it was removed periodically from oil rig pumps. He observed that the oil workers had been using the substance to treat cuts and burns. He took the substance and he brought it back with him to his lab. Then by 1872, Robert Chesebrough stated in his U.S. patent (U.S. Patent 127,568), “I, Robert Chesebrough, have invented a new and useful product from petroleum which I have named Vaseline…”
