The benefits of eating oily fish are huge. This is due to the amount of omega-3s that are found in them. Of course, for some of us, the idea of having to consume two to three portions of oily fish a week isn’t really feasible or something we would care to do. This is when fish oil supplements come in and can really help us all to stay healthy in an easier, more efficient way.

What is fish oil?

Fish oil is actually the most commonly consumed dietary supplement. This is mainly due to the trialed and proven positive impacts that fish oil has on our brains and our bodies. So what makes fish oil so important in our diets? Omega-3s.

Omega 3s are fatty acids that help boost our health. It’s found in fish and most commonly in:

  • Herring
  • Tuna
  • Anchovies
  • Mackerel (Oily fish)

Eye health

The Omega 3s in fish oil can even help with our eye health and even help to minimize dry eyes, as studies have now shown us that people who are lacking in omega-3s are at a higher risk of getting eye diseases.

Healthy skin

Whether you are a sufferer of acne or just get a few pesky spots a year, bad skin can be a nightmare for us all. Luckily taking fish oil supplements can give our body the healthy fatty acids it needs in order to minimize the impacts of a range of skin disorders, including psoriasis and dermatitis.

Weight loss and tackling obesity

Obesity is an illness gripping the nation, with rises in both adults and children now being diagnosed as obese. One of the benefits of omega 3s is that they can really help to aid weight loss. Fish oil helps by aiding the body to lose weight as well as improving body composition.

Asthma and allergy

If you are someone who struggles with asthma or allergies, then you already know how much of a nightmare these things can be:

  • Itchy skin.
  • A rash.
  • Flaky, dry skin.
  • A runny nose.
  • Itchy and dry eyes.
  • Watery eyes, blurry vision.
  • Suffering from congestion.

One thing you might not be aware of is how fish oil can help you.

A number of studies show that fish oil may reduce asthma symptoms, especially in early life. In one review of nearly 100,000 people, a mother’s fish or omega-3 intake was found to reduce the risk of asthma in children by 24–29%.

Mental health and depression

With mental health coming more into the spotlight in recent years, people have been turning to less well-known ways of combating it. It has recently been researched that omega-3s can help us not just with our bodies but also with our minds. This was discovered when it was identified that people who are suffering from severe depression actually have lower blood levels of omega-3s.

Help to lower inflammation

A great benefit of omega-3s is that they are well known to help lower inflammation. This has the knock-on effect of minimizing premature aging and risks from a range of diseases.
