The major threat in the country are those posed by organized crime and rebel groups such as the Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional (ELN), and Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) which operates mostly in the rural areas and carry out kidnappings or other acts of terror.  High crime rate is still a big concern in the main cities and coca cultivation is concentrated in the northern region and hence poses a higher risk than other areas.  The profit from the illegal mining and drug trafficking continues to support the activities of criminal gangs, which have controlled large areas of the country.
