The economic crisis that has racked the country for several years now has given rise to its high crime rate, civil unrest, and poor infrastructure. Protests and demonstrations are a common occurrence, as the country suffers electricity, food, and water shortage. Kidnappings and other violent crimes can take place anywhere, particularly near the border with Brazil and Colombia, where drug traffickers are active. Murder rate is also among the highest in the world.
