The high-risk areas in Mali are the Northern and Central Mali regions, particularly in Bamako due to terrorism and kidnapping, especially in public places or where there are large gatherings like festivals or sporting events.  Those who represent western interests are prime targets, as evidenced in the recent attack on the Koulikoro Training Centre and MINUSMA camp.  The past year also saw a vast deterioration of human rights in the country due to armed Islamic group attacks, counterterrorism efforts, and intercommunity violence.
