Aside from the current protests in Abuja that can turn violent and the high levels of violent street crime that is normal in poorer areas, the main threats are kidnapping, whether terror or for ransom, and terrorism activities, especially in the northern Adamawa State and Borno and Yobe states.  Terror groups like the Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa (ISWA) have carried out a string of recent attacks on mosques, military establishments, and other public areas that resulted in multiple casualties and injuries.  The Nigerian army has recently conducted an operation against Boko Haram, rescuing over 50 people held captive in the Borno state.
