Terrorist groups have been known to carry out attacks in the country but the main areas to be avoided are in the Mindanao area, including Marawi City, and the Sulu archipelago, and the Sulu Sea, where most of the kidnappings take place.  Street crime is a major concern in the bigger cities, with poverty considered one of the top drivers due to the low economic growth in the last few decades, but for the most part can be avoided with the necessary precaution.  The war on drugs, which was a flagship campaign for the Duterte administration, has caused controversy due to the extra-judicial killings, but has placed the country’s illegal drug use below the global average.
