Statistics show that by 2050, you’ll find more plastic in the oceans than fishes. Also, ten million plastic bags are being discarded at this very moment and there is not a lot of scope for improvement. Banning plastic is a significant step but what about the debris that already pollutes our planet in massive volumes?

We don’t know about love but plastic lasts forever. The fashion industry is working hard to incorporate anything that harms the environment when discarded into their fashion lines. A recent trend has taken over the industry by a storm and it is–Recycled Plastic!

So, what are the top fashionable ways you can recycle plastic today? What are the governments across the world today? And how can you contribute to a greener and safer earth as well? Let’s take a look.

Top brands are coming up with ways to flaunt recycled plastic into their fabrics.Plastic bottles get a new life once they have entered the recycling process of being chipped, melted, and spun into a cool puffy jacket or even a pair of comfortable stretchy pants.

The idea is to take the non-biodegradable waste created by man and turn it into something beautiful for everyday use.

How is Plastic Turned into Clothes?

Some brands are using plastic bottles while some are recycling to the bit by incorporating anything ‘plastic’ that washes ashore or is sitting in a landfill.

Although, the keychallenge designers face is not finding rubbish, that’s everywhere honestly, but the technology required to turn trash into potential gold. Here’s how the pervasive and non-biodegradable pollutant is converted into fashionable weaves.

From Plastic to Fantastic

Step 1: Plastic is collected from landfills and any possible source and shipped to the recycle centers.

Step 2: These Recycle Centers shred the bottles and every type of plastic into bits. You might be wondering why the bottles are shredded. When you toss the empty bottles into trash cans, more often than not you’re leaving behind drops of the drink in them. These tiny drops can ruin the entire recycling process. This is where shredding saves the day.

Step 3: These shredded bits of plastic are then bagged up and shipped off to their next destination. The bundles are now sorted based on color; white plastic can be dyed into different colors of threads.

Step 4: The mixture is now sent down hot pipes for the melting process. When it reaches the desired temperature, filaments of threads are created from this melted mixture.

Fun Fact: These filaments are 5 times thinner than a single hair strand.

So now we have an entirely manmade material made from ‘trash’.

Retracing Your Steps

Although the clothes made from plastic are recycled, the plastic still leaves traces. These ‘Carbon Footprints’ are bits of plastic that still prevail during the process. This footprint is still smaller than it would’ve been without recycling any plastic. With time (and better technology) maybe we can continue recycling plastic in fashionable ways!
