Dubai is known to some as the “City of Gold,” being one of the most cosmopolitan places in the world with around 16 million visitors annually. From its amazing skyscrapers, to its world class cuisine, to gorgeous sandy beaches and shopping centers that can measure up to the best of them, Dubai has become a newfound leader in best places to visit during these past few years. Of course when traveling to another country, especially one that is so deeply cultural and set in its ancient ways, there are rules that everyone needs to know and follow before heading to this part of the United Arab Emirates.

If you get to visit this so-called jewel of the UAE, here are 30 things not to do when in Dubai.

\u0016Don’t Dress Inappropriately

""

Source: https://i1.wp.com/

Dubai may be home to some of the most fashionable and expensive stores on the planet and people dress like it too, but they are also quite strict when it comes to just how skimpy or suggestive your attire may be. If you get the chance to visit Dubai, make sure that you aren’t too scantily dressed nor should you wear anything too tight or show off too much skin. Not only will you get nasty looks, but you can actually get fined if the police think that what you’re wearing is inappropriate.

Don’t Curse In Public

""

Source: https://i0.wp.com/

Dubai is a highly conservative country, and has always been, just like many of its other UAE counterparts. Cursing, especially in public, is not allowed, more so if it is aimed at someone who is from there. Any form of profanity or unsuitable language can land you in jail and is actually punishable by law.

Don’t Use Your Left Hand In Greetings

""

Source: http://www.nativeforeignermag.com/

It is seen as incredibly rude to use your left hand when dealing with others, and for good reason. Way before the ways of the modern world when toilet paper was yet to be a thing, people had to use their left hand for “body hygiene,” if you catch our drift. Until now, the left hand isn’t used to greet, shake hands, take food from someone, eat, or much of anything really when in Dubai. But if you happen to be left-handed, then this tip makes it harder for you, yet if you don’t want to offend anyone, you still need to be mindful of this rule regardless.

Don’t Show Too Much PDA

""

Source: https://www.lovepanky.com/

PDA, otherwise known as public displays of affection, are when a couple chooses to be affectionate with one another by holding hands, hugging and kissing their significant other when in public. In Dubai, don’t show too much PDA, especially any that can be considered grotesquely inappropriate, or you might find yourself being fined or worse, placed behind bars.

Don’t Tell Everyone If You Happen To Be Gay

""

Source: https://www.dailysignal.com/

Being gay in a highly Muslim nation is quite difficult, even if you aren’t Muslim. And for those that are normally incredibly open about their sexuality, which should never be an issue or a problem, unfortunately in Dubai, you’ll need to be extra careful. Despite a rather large and thriving “vibrant underground gay scene in Dubai,” it is still illegal to have homosexual relations, no matter how backwards this may seem to the rest of the world.

Don’t Eat In Public During The Time Of Ramadan

""

Source: https://www.thenational.ae/

Ramadan is a holy month on the Islamic calendar which is celebrated on their ninth month, and is highly respected. Muslims take this season very seriously, and even fast from sun up to sun down the entire time. Even if you do not happen to be Muslim, you sill should not eat during the time of Ramadan when in public. Of course non-practicing Muslims are not exactly expected to follow the same traditions, but meals should still be eaten much more discretely to show respect.

Don’t Drink In Public Or Worse, Get Drunk

""

Source: https://cdn.shopify.com/

Again, this very conservative country totally frowns upon those that drink in public, and worse yet, become intoxicated because of it. If you must drink, be sure to go to a designated bar or drink in the comforts of your home or the home of someone you know. If not, you can actually be fined for public intoxication.

Don’t Dance In Public

""

Source: https://i.ytimg.com/

Like alcohol, dancing in public is also prohibited. While you can go to a disco or night club, or the confines of your own home to enjoy some EDM – otherwise known as electronic dance music – don’t strut your stuff in public. Sadly, getting your groove on while out in public is just another activity that is strictly prohibited.

Don’t Be Publicly Noisy

""

Source: https://www.rewardsnetwork.com/

It would seem that Dubai prefers their peace and quiet as being noisy in public or playing loud music, especially during the month-long observance of Ramadan, is not allowed. Incredibly, if you are caught, once again the repercussions could be a hefty fine that no one would want to pay off.

Don’t Stay With Someone In A Hotel If You’re Not Married

""

Source: https://www.fourcornershotels.com/

It is against the law to remain in the same hotel with your partner if you aren’t married, more so share a room. While hotels aren’t going to do a background search into whether the person you are staying in a room with happens to be your husband or wife, still, if you get caught sharing a room, then you will not be happy with the consequences.

Don’t Indulge In Pre-Marital Sex

""

Source: https://bisiadewale.com/

It should come as no surprise that if you aren’t allowed to stay in the same hotel room with your partner if you’re not married, it is also illegal to have sex if you aren’t married. Yes, it may seem incredibly old school, but it happens to be their way. Of course, there may not be a way for anyone to prove you’ve actually indulged in sex while unmarried in Dubai, but be extra careful to not have sex in public unless you want to end up behind bars.

Don’t Bring All Your Prescription Drugs

""

Source: https://www.pgpf.org/

Drugs, both prescription and especially illegal ones, are serious business in Dubai. Even if you happen to have a medical prescription from your doctor back home with you, if it is considered illegal in Dubai, then they will not only confiscate the drugs, but you can face some serious years behind bars. Before to check the listing of which medications are allowed into the middle east before deciding to travel there with them in the first place.

Don’t Bring Or Do Illegal Drugs

""

Source: https://static.independent.co.uk/

Of course, illegal drugs are even more highly illicit and illegal in Dubai, so don’t even think about carrying any into the country, or worse, take them. Crazily, if officials decide to test your blood or your urine and they happen to find even a small trace of any illegal substances in your system, they will consider this as ‘possession,’ leaving you at the mercy of the Dubai courts, and believe us when we say, they are very far from lenient.

Don’t Be Afraid Of Heights

""

Source: https://bookscarra.files.wordpress.com/

Not only does Dubai boast of having the tallest building in the world, with the Buri Khalifa which has held the record since 2008, there are a lot of other activities that you can do that will test your fear of heights, if you have any that is. But the Buri Khalifa building alone stands almost 3000 feet into the sky and even has an observation deck all the way on the 24th floor, as well as a sky lounge on the 148th floor. If you can handle it, then make sure you head up and see the world in a way that you’ve never imagined it before.

Don’t Smoke In Public

""

Source: http://forestonline.eu/

It’s not surprising that you are not allowed to smoke in public, or any other non-smoking areas either. Of course, most of the areas that allow smoking are normally your personal homes or your car, but other than that, you will find it hard to look for a place that allows you to light one up so be sure to double check which ones are designated smoking areas before lighting one up.

Don’t Take Photos Without Permission

""

Source: https://ak4.picdn.net/

With today’s technology and everyone owning a phone that is already has a high quality camera, people snap away left and right with almost zero regard for their surroundings or the people that they might capture in their photos as well. In Dubai, don’t ever take a photo without first asking if it’s okay, more so if they include women and children. If you must take a picture, be sure to ask permission first.

Don’t Jog Topless

""

Source: https://www.swissotel.com/

Normally when people exercise, women and men alike wear as little clothing as possible to keep cool. In fact, most men run while in just shorts and running shoes. If you decide to go to Dubai and choose to jog outside in public, don’t remove your shirt, no matter how nice your body looks underneath it. Unless you’re in a pool, beach or water park, you should always be dressed appropriately in proper exercise gear, and not show off too much skin.

Don’t Disrespect The Royal Family

""

Source: https://images.khaleejtimes.com/

Like England, there are a number of ruling Royal families within the UAE, Dubai included. Whatever you do, don’t disrespect the royal family in Dubai or say anything malicious about them. The Royal Family is to be admired and respected and saying something against them can be constituted as treason.

Don’t Point Your Soles At Someone

""

Source: https://i.imgur.com/

Because the feet are associated with the ground and the ground is considered very dirty being the lowest area, you should never point your soles at another person because of the dirt that covers your shoes, especially if that person is Muslim. They consider this very rude. Make sure that you are aware of where your feet are pointed at all times and never point them at one of the local Arabs.

Don’t Make The Thumbs Up Sign

""

Source: https://www.citycabs.co.uk/

Arabs are sticklers for rules and regulations, so making sure exactly what these are should be top priority before heading over. Unlike the US which considers a “thumbs up sign” as something of encouragement, in Dubai, this is the complete opposite. So rather than showing someone they are doing a good job, rather, say the words of encouragement instead.

Don’t Show The OK Sign

""

Source: https://static.independent.co.uk/

Just like the thumbs up sign, doing an ‘OK sign’ is just as bad as a thumbs up sign. You might think that you are giving someone the highest praise, or even just assuring them that they are doing a good job, but to them, there is nothing okay about the OK sign.

Don’t Flip Someone The Bird While Driving

""

Source: https://i1.wp.com/

Once again, this is another time when hand signals are considered in bad taste, except this particular sign is rude no matter where in the world you may be. If you happen to be driving on the road and want to show your disgust or annoyance at another driver, never flip them the bird like you might do in the States. This could actually get you into horrible trouble with the law, like many other rules in the Middle East.

Don’t Go During Summertime

""

Source: https://www.dubai.com/

If you’ve never experienced intense heat, then going to Dubai during the summer is going to give you the shock of your life. Don’t go in the summertime when the temperatures can reach astounding heights of over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Even the beaches can reach well into the 100s, which means that taking a dip may not really be all that refreshing.

Don’t Say No To The Amazing Cuisine

""

Source: https://assets.traveltriangle.com/

Yes, Dubai may have a lot of rules to follow, but they also offer some of the most world-class hotels, activities, shopping malls and of course, amazing cuisine that you will find anywhere in the world. Some of the best restaurants are in Dubai having quite the number of Michelin-stars to their names so never say no to a 5-star meal.

Don’t Expect It To Be Cheap

""

Source: https://www.arabianbusiness.com/

Dubai is a rich country filled with some of the most luxurious and world-class places to go and see. If you happen to go, don’t expect that it will be cheap. With a country that is diverse in every portion of its city life, as well as having an unending number of things to do, if you want to truly enjoy your time there, then be prepared to spend.

Don’t Skip The Historical Side

""

Source: https://dubaiculture.gov.ae/

Dubai is one of the most cosmopolitan and advanced cities you will find in the world, yet there is still a portion that has preserved its historical side. The Al Fahidi Historical neighborhood isn’t only one of the oldest areas in Dubai, but it will give you a true feel for what the old Dubai once looked like before it became the bustling metropolis that it is today.

Don’t Forget To Head To The Desert

""

Source: https://mediastream.jumeirah.com/

Dubai is situated on the desert, but if you want to get a real feel of what the true desert is like, then be sure to book a legit tour which will take you just 20 minutes to see the true Arabian desert. Depending on the tour you choose, you can either go for just the morning, stay until the afternoon, or even go during the cooler evenings. Regardless of the time you choose, it is sure to be one experience you will never forget.

Don’t Miss Out On Sight Seeing

""

Dubai isn’t only home to the tallest building in the world, but it has something for every type of traveler. From opulent hotels, to upscale restaurants, beautiful beaches, a lavish desert and loads of other attractions you shouldn’t miss, Dubai has tons of fun and exciting things to do. Be sure to speak to the concierge at your hotel and make the most of your days while visiting this exciting city.

Don’t Say No To The Dubai Mall

""

Source: https://www.bayut.com/

It may seem a tad bit corny to suggest that you go to a mall, but the Dubai Mall is anything but corny. Not only is it the biggest mall in the world, the Dubai Mall is over 5.9 million square feet with ‘over 1,200 shops, 120 cafes and restaurants, and even a luxury hotel, and even an Olympic sized skating rink and other outdoor activities. Plus getting the chance to shop ‘til you drop just makes it that much more worthwhile.

Don’t Go Home Empty Handed

""

Source: https://sc02.alicdn.com/

Dubai is probably one of the most interesting and diverse cities you will ever get the chance to go to, with its lavish feel yet conservative and old school background, it’s also probably the most contradictory type of place you’ll ever step foot in. Plus you can actually take home some of the most opulent and authentic Persian Rugs and carpets that you will ever find. If you know you can handle following the rules and you want to get a sense of the Middle East in one of the most beautiful places it has to offer, then start making your travel plans.
