The Global Peace Index or GPI report gauges each country with a list of criteria to determine how safe or peaceful that country is. These criteria fall under two categories: Internal Peace, which include intensity of internal conflict, deaths from internal conflict, and violent crime, among 11 others; and the External Peace, which include neighbouring countries relations, deaths from external conflict, and refugees and IDPs, among 6 others, for a total of 23 items factored to arrive at the GPI.

The GPI scale is 1 – 5, with 1 being the most peaceful, and 5 the least peaceful. As of June 2019, the countries considered among the safest and most peaceful are Iceland, New Zealand, Portugal, Austria, and Denmark.

At the other end of the spectrum are considered the most dangerous countries to live in, and here they are.

This country is definitely less dangerous compared to the other countries in the list, with moderate crime reported as well as the absence of any notable attack carried out by political or terrorist groups. The country’s economy is crippled with huge debts incurred during former leader Mugabe’s time, and suffers from water and electricity shortage. The government is quite strict when it comes to political demonstrations, and in enforcing regulations that safeguard their conservative outlook. Recent demonstrations in the capital of Harare have been met with violence, with police firing teargas and beating protesters. With the country on the brink of economic collapse, it relies heavily on foreign aid which might be hard to get given the current situation.

Aside from street crime, the area within 25 kilometers of the border with Ethiopia pose the major risk due to mine fields and should be avoided. This pretty much goes for most of the border crossings, while the border with Djibouti and Sudan should also be steered clear of to avoid possible encounters with armed groups. In addition, the land mines has presented the country with environmental concerns like soil erosion, deforestation, overgrazing, and a significant amount of land loss.

Terrorist groups have been known to carry out attacks in the country but the main areas to be avoided are in the Mindanao area, including Marawi City, and the Sulu archipelago, and the Sulu Sea, where most of the kidnappings take place. Street crime is a major concern in the bigger cities, with poverty considered one of the top drivers due to the low economic growth in the last few decades, but for the most part can be avoided with the necessary precaution. The war on drugs, which was a flagship campaign for the Duterte administration, has caused controversy due to the extra-judicial killings, but has placed the country’s illegal drug use below the global average.

Crime in the areas of Cibitoke and Bubanza province, Bujumbura rural province west of the Rusizi river, the road heading north of the Bujumbura airport, and the Ruvubu national park, are quite high and should be avoided. The political scene in the country is volatile at the very least, with coup attempts and disputed elections, as well as assassination attempts, which eventually led to the deployment of UN peacekeepers to the country.

Egypt (GPI: 2.521)

As tempting as the museums and pyramids are, Egypt is still not without its share of threats brought about by terrorist groups in the area. There was even an attack on a tourist bus near the pyramids in Giza using IEDs. The Sinai Peninsula, and the western desert are the main areas to be avoided as these terrorists may attack without warning, particularly in crowded areas. The Daesh-Sinai is the most notorious group in the country and though they mainly target the government and religious groups, collateral damage is still very likely.

In addition to crime and terrorism, minefields abound the border with Libya and Sudan. The same terrorist groups operating in the Sahed region are also the threat in Chad, with kidnappings in the Lake Chad Basin, and the areas near the border with Sudan as well as the Central African Republic, as the main concern. It is also best to keep a distance of at least 30 kilometers from all borders. While Boko Haram has expanded its operations in Nigeria to include this neighboring country, its military has been quite instrumental in fighting Al Qaeda affiliated groups.

The areas to be avoided in Cameroon are the North, Far North, Northwest and Southwest regions, and parts of the East and Adamawa Regions due to crime and kidnapping, in addition to terrorism in the Far North, and armed conflict in the Northwest and Southwest regions. The Boko Haram, ISWA, and Islamic State Greater Sahara (ISGS) are among the terrorist groups operating in the region of Sahel and Lake Chad Basin, and have been known for kidnappings over long distances. Street crime is a concern as well, but the threat posed by these terrorist groups are the primary risk.

Iran (GPI: 2.542)

Like other countries in the area, the dangers in Iran are those coming from terrorist groups as well as the common street crime. However, there are some areas that are particularly volatile and needs to be avoided, like the province of Sistan-Baluchistan where Kurds and Sunnis have their conflict, the city of Bam and the area east of it and Jask, as well as making sure to maintain a distance of at least 10 kilometers from the border with Iraq, and 100 kilometers from the border with Afghanistan to avoid the ethnic conflicts.

Mexico (GPI: 2.600)

Whether by warring gangs or drug cartels, crime and kidnapping placed Mexico in the most dangerous list. Main areas to be avoided are the states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas. There are still areas you should still be wary of but exercising proper caution should be enough more often than not. Kidnappings are quite common, especially the “flash” kidnappings, where they basically rob you. Poverty is considered one of the top reasons for petty crime, which escalates with street gangs that are often the entry point in joining the drug cartels.

The economic crisis that has racked the country for several years now has given rise to its high crime rate, civil unrest, and poor infrastructure. Kidnappings and other violent crimes can take place anywhere, particularly near the border with Brazil and Colombia, where drug traffickers are active. Since no peace treaty has been signed between them, North Korea is technically still at war, albeit a cold one, with South Korea. Efforts are being made to have the Korean peninsula denuclearized as the unconventional warfare capabilities of the nation are well-known. Internally, however, there is no violence due to terrorism or militant groups as compared to other countries. The capital of Pyongyang can even be visited by tourists via an organized tour but will have to stay within the city to avoid straying into military restricted area.

The conflict has already claimed over 10,000 lives and with the incident in the Kerch Strait, a martial law was decreed in November of 2018 in fear of a Russian invasion. As such, public demonstrations take place with regularity.

Security forces have turned to violence to curb the demonstrations, resulting to over a hundred killed (some even thrown in the river) and scores injured. There were even reports of human rights violations by the security forces. Terrorist groups are also a threat, particularly to western interests through shootings, bombings, and kidnappings.

Terrorist attacks on public areas are commonplace, as well as kidnappings not just in the capital of Tripoli, but on several parts of the country as well. Somalia may not be at war, in the strictest sense of the word, but there is enough violence between the terrorist groups and warring clans or militias that it ranks among the most dangerous countries. Anarchy rules as unopposed militias establish their own territories while terrorist groups indiscriminately carry out attacks and kidnappings against government officials, westerners and those working for western organizations, often leaving civilians dead. Not to mention the food shortage that has plagued the nation for years.

Although it has been reported that the violence has somewhat decreased in the past year, the danger and threat is still high as the country’s military forces and US-led coalition continues its military operations against ISIS. Hotels, restaurants, and other public places continue to be targets for terror attacks, while Turkish forces conduct its own military efforts against the Kurdistan Workers Party or PKK, an armed group active in Turkey and has entrenched itself in the norther Iraqi border. The fight against terror has also resulted to human rights violations for those suspected to be affiliated with ISIS.

Yemen remains a very unstable and dangerous country with the violence incurred by the civil war and terrorist attacks. Air strikes and ground fighting has continued to persist between the Hadi-led and Saudi Arabia-backed Yemeni government and the Houthi armed movement, while Al Qaeda carries out terror attacks and kidnappings, regardless of time and location. Not to mention violence stemming from armed tribal groups seeking autonomy from the warring factions. This has left the extremely poor nation with tens of thousands dead and millions on starvation, as relief efforts are considered terrorist targets.

The most dangerous country to live in the world in 2018 dropped a place due to the decrease in violence following the defeat of ISIS and the restriction of the conflict that has been plaguing the country. However, violence is still high with military operations still in full swing. Terrorist attacks on major cities and kidnappings continue to be a high-level threat throughout the country, particularly on foreign nationals. It is estimated that over 400,000 have already died in the Syrian conflict, considering the country only has a current population of 17 million.
