There are several domesticated cat breeds, most are cute and cuddly. But cat owners know that at times they can be nasty and temperamental. Cats are independent thinkers, and unlike dogs, they normally don’t obey their owners’ commands. They do as they please, even when trained properly. Basically, you don’t adopt the cat… it adopts you. Beware of the cat that does not like you.

Still, cat lovers learn to adapt to their cats and a symbiotic relationship can be achieved. However, some breeds are more dangerous than others. We are not talking about wild cats like tigers, lions, jaguars, etc. Dangerous here is used loosely, referring basically to difficult and ill-mannered cats. But there are some hybrid cats that have been bred from two species that were never meant to mate, a wild cat with a domestic cat. Domestic by no means equates to tamed, many cat owners forget this fact. Still, cat lovers will always love their feline companions.

Here are some of the more dangerous cat breeds to own:

Savannahs

""

Source: https://i.ytimg.com/

This is the largest hybrid cat. It is a cross between a Serval and a domestic cat. They can weigh up to 25 pounds, and are as large as a medium-sized dog. They are loyal, but can be aggressive and ferocious especially to strangers. Having this breed as a pet is against the law in many countries. A notable trait is its ability to jump high, some to about 8 feet from the ground. They are a very inquisitive breed, and often learn how to open doors and cupboards. Most do not fear water, and will readily immerse themselves in it. Savannahs may either chirp (from the Serval father), meow, or produce a sound which is a mixture of the two.

Bengals

""

Source: https://d32l83enj9u8rg.cloudfront.net/

Another hybrid cat, the Bengal is a cross between a domestic cat with an Asian Leopard cat. They are beautiful, with varied appearances and come in several colors and coat patterns, and assorted eye colors. They are highly intelligent, but when bored they can be aggressive and destructive. They are energetic and very hyper. They are long and lean, but quite muscular so they appear larger than they actually are. Bengals are prohibited in Hawaii and New York City, and banned outright in Australia. Other US states will only allow the F5 lineage, F1 (first offspring of the Asian Leopard and domestic cat) up to F4 are regulated.

Chausie Cats

""

Source: https://www.catster.com/

They have long ears and short tails and are very athletic. They are social but are not good with young children. They are good with other animals, particularly dogs. They are built for running and jumping, and need outdoor activity. They form strong bonds with their human owners, and will have a difficult time adjusting to new owners if re-homed as adults.

Sphynx

""

Source: https://www.scienceabc.com/

This cat breed is hairless and requires attention from its owners to be happy. It is demanding and wants to know that it is the number one. When unhappy it can be aggressive and it will show its owners that they have neglected it. It is best to keep giving this breed its proper attention. They are extroverted, very energetic, curious, and behave dog-like, greeting their owners at the door, or walking beside them for a stroll. They have large lemon-shaped eyes, large ears, well muscled with a round pot-belly like abdomen, and thicker paw pads than other cats.

Cymric

It does not like other animals, and when provoked, will be very aggressive. It is protective of its owners family as well. Generally they are tail-less (called a rumpy) but not all have this trait. Some have a short knob of a tail (rumpy risers), some have a short tail stump (stumpies), and then you have the ones with a normal tail (longies). It is impossible to predict in a litter what tail types will appear. They are medium sized cats that weigh between 7 to 13 pounds.

Bombay

""

Source: https://www.hillspet.com/

The Bombay is a beautiful cat that looks like a panther. They treasure their peace and quiet and will not make good companions in households that play music often or have noisy children. Their sensitivity makes them a nervous breed that can become aggressive. They will often hiss which means “keep away.” They are generally all black, with copper or green eyes. They are brave, and not as independent as other breeds. They crave attention from their owners, and hate being left alone. They are very vocal, and cry or meow more than other cats.

Siamese

""

Source: https://mypetandi.bayer.com/

A favorite breed of cat lovers because they are so pretty. They have wide set eyes that make them prettier than other breeds. They make good pets, but are not friendly, usually bonding only with a particular person in the household and snubbing everyone else. They do not like children and will not tolerate being petted by anyone aside from their favorite person. Most are born completely white, but as they get older pigments start to appear, mostly around the nose, ears, paws, and tails. They are extremely vocal, and emit a loud, low-pitched voice which is unique. Normally they are bought in pairs, as they can easily get depressed if left alone, even for a few hours.

Scottish Fold

""

Source: https://imagevars.gulfnews.com/

One of the cutest cat breeds around, but looks can be deceiving. They are a bit aggressive and do not like other pets in the household. They do not interact well with children and will be jealous of a new baby. They will bond well with the owners who feed it and provide them with water. This breed is best for a person who lives alone. It has a natural dominant-gene mutation that causes the ears to “fold” or bend forward and down towards the front of the head. It is often described to have an “owl-like” appearance. They are quite rarer than other exotic breeds, and can be short or long haired.

Singapura

""

Source: https://www.hillspet.com/

This aggressive cat comes from the streets of Singapore. They are rarely social, and would rather keep away from people rather than interacting with them. They are active and curious, but will attack anyone whom they perceive is in their way. They will not hesitate to bite, scratch, claw and hiss. It will take time for them to get used to humans who are not from the household. They are one of the smallest breeds of cats, and weigh about 5 pounds on the average. It is possible to adopt a Singapura for around $75 – $150, but if you buy from a breeder, it can cost around $2,000.

American Wirehair

""

Source: https://cdn1-www.cattime.com/

This cat has a very coarse coat, hence its name. It is similar to the coats of some dog breeds, like terriers. The Wirehair coat trait is dominant, so any breeding between a Wirehair and another cat will produce wired kittens. It is not affectionate, and will not back down when provoked. It is medium-sized, but is very powerful and heavily muscled. It can be quite passive around strangers and kids, for as long as it is not bothered. More often than not, people find them to be unfriendly. They have to be patient, eventually the cat will relax and be more friendly.

Korat

""

Source: https://media.istockphoto.com/

This Asian cat is easy to spot. It has big green eyes and a very slick silver-blue-grey coat. They scare easily and do not like loud or sudden noises. When Korats see children, they become very passive. It’s not that they are unfriendly, they are scared because children can be loud and abrasive. Scared cats, but they will protect their territory. In Thailand they are considered a “good-luck cat.” They are given in pairs to newlyweds and esteemed people. Until recently, Korats were not sold, only given. They have very good memory, and if brought to a new place and left there, they will be able to find their way home.

Egyptian Mau

""

Source: https://vetstreet-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com/

Not really aggressive, but very protective. They will bond strongly with family, but don’t do well with strangers. They are a shy breed that will show aggression when it feels its belongings are threatened. They will hiss and paw you if you touch their toys, dish, or bedding. They are one of the few naturally spotted breeds, and are considered rare. They are the fastest domesticated cats and can sprint up to 30 mph. They come in 6 colors, the most common is silver, followed by bronze, smoke, black, caramel, and blue/pewter as the least common. Their facial expressions change depending on their mood, as well as the color of their eyes, from green to turquoise.

Ocicat

""

Source: https://d17fnq9dkz9hgj.cloudfront.net/

The Ocicat was named for its resemblance to an ocelot, but it has no ocelot in its blood line. They come in a variety of colors, but is known for its spots. They are muscular and heavier than they look. They are sociable and playful. They are good around strangers and get along with other animals. However, they can get aggressive at times. They can be trained just like dogs, and easily will learn to fetch, sit, lie down, and other commands. Females weigh around 6 to 9 pounds, while males average between 9 to 15 pounds.

Pixiebob

""

Source: https://vetstreet-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com/

This cat is a cross between bob-tailed cats of the mountains and a domestic cat. They are tall cats, with their hind legs slightly longer than the front legs. A distinct characteristic of this breed is that it is polydactyly, and can have up to seven toes per foot. They have thick double coats as well. These cats need regular grooming and their thick coat needs brushing to avoid matting and excessive shedding. They can be quite large, and are muscular. While they are loyal and can make good pets, they can become aggressive and fierce. It’s the bobcat in them.

Caracals

""

Source: https://www.africansky.com/

A cat difficult to understand. They have many emotions and may not know what it is feeling. This makes them unpredictable and quite dangerous. They are illegal to keep as pets in many states. They are large and can weigh about 40 pounds. They also hiss like a snake, and will destroy what it can. Nasty habit. Their unique distinguishing trait is clearly seen in their long tufted ears. They are typically nocturnal, and prey on small mammals, rodents, and birds. They have been tamed and used for hunting since ancient Egypt times.

Geoffroy’s Cats

""

Source: https://upload.wikimedia.org/

These are the smallest wild cats in the world and normally weigh around 8 pounds. Because they are small, they can make good house pets. But don’t let their size fool you. They can be very fierce. They are anxious and do not like noise. If you choose to have this breed in your home, make sure you respect their peace and quiet. They can stand on their hind legs supported by their tail, to scan the area. This is an unusual behavior among cats. They are strong swimmers, and love to climb trees. They are very agile, and can walk along the undersides of tree branches.

Norwegian Forest Cat

""

Source: http://cdn.shopify.com/

They are fluffy and good-looking, but are pretty fierce. They have an insulated double coat to protect them from cold winters. They can be friendly but on their own terms. If they are provoked, they will attack. They are large cats and are effective hunters. They prefer the outdoors, but can adapt to indoor living. Their ancestors were brought to Norway by the Vikings. They are powerful cats, and have claws which make them good at climbing. They are known to eat more than other domestic cat breeds, and will complain if they don’t get enough to eat. If outdoors, they will hunt for their food.

Lykoi

""

Source: https://tica.org/

Very bizarre looking cat with a wolf-like (or werewolf) appearance that may shock you. They are very cautious and wary of humans. This can make them a bit dangerous if they perceive you to be a threat. However, given time, they will adjust and eventually warm up to their owners. They are quite rare, and can cost up to $2,500 a kitten. They lack a substantial undercoat for weather protection, and can get sunburn or hypothermia if left outdoors. They are best suited indoors, and need occasional bathing to remove excess oil from the ski and ears.

Donskoy

""

Source: https://www.thehappycatsite.com/

Similar to the Sphynx this breed is also hairless and wrinkly. Most consider it an ugly looking cat. It is not related to the Sphynx although they may resemble each other. The Donskoy originated from Russia. It is a dominant breed and will dominate other cats in the household. Not exactly dangerous to humans for as long as they are not provoked. They don’t like being alone, and crave for attention. They are not recommended for owners who travel or leave home for long periods. They are very active, and are as loyal as dogs. You have to wipe them down daily as their body produces oils, and there is no hair to absorb it. This, as well as monthly bathing will prevent skin problems.

Tortoiseshell

""

Source: https://www.thehappycatsite.com/

So named due to its coat coloring similarity to tortoiseshell material. Mostly exclusively female. Males are rare, and usually sterile. This cat breed is strong-willed with a hot-tempered personality. Rumored to be one of the most aggressive cats kept as pets. Many cultures consider them as good luck cats. In Ireland and Scotland, stray tortoiseshell cats are signs of good luck to come, and here in the US, they are referred to as “money” cats that bring fortunes to their owners. However, this is not factual based, but there is no harm in believing…

Siberian

""

Source: https://d17fnq9dkz9hgj.cloudfront.net/

While not exactly dangerous, this cat is very territorial which can make it difficult at times. Nature designed this cat for survival, its instincts are very strong. They are friendly with their owners, but are cautious with strangers. They are also fearless, and will defend its territory with all it has got. They are calm and quiet, so it will take something outrageous to irritate it. It is related to the Norwegian forest cat and possesses many similarities. They are also used to cold weather, and their fur is textured, but glossy. They can be seen in Russian paintings hundreds of years old, but only arrived in the US in 1990. They are rare outside Europe, and can be quite expensive, around $1,400.

Canadian Lynx

""

Source: https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/

Not as ferocious as a bobcat, although slightly larger, but aggressive enough to be a menace at times. However, they are good with humans, even strangers. Just don’t try taking them for a walk, they do not like it. They love to climb, so if you have a woody yard, this would be perfect for this cat. They have shorter front limbs than their hindlimbs, and have dense fur. They can weigh up to 40 pounds and are about 39 inches long. They are good swimmers, and excellent hunters.

Ocelots

""

Source: https://i.ytimg.com/

Not meant to be a housecat, but some people insist on it. While several states don’t require a permit to own this big cat, areas like Alaska and New England prohibit ocelots as pets. Having an exotic, normally wild cat may be a status symbol, but if not properly trained or socialized at a young age, can be dangerous. They do not like being commanded. They are hunters, so smaller animals are at risk with an ocelot around. They have black spots, streaks and stripes. They are very expensive, and can cost up to $20,000.

Turkish Van

""

Source: https://upload.wikimedia.org/

A large cat breed that surprisingly loves the water. They are distinctly white, with marked tails and ears. They are curious, athletic, and active. Not really a danger in the home, but when they want attention, you had better give them some. Otherwise they can get nasty, and spiteful. They especially don’t like being held or cuddled for long periods. But they are playful and energetic, and are “dog-friendly.” While many cats have three distinct hair types in their coat, guard hair, awn hair, and down hair, the Turkish Van has no undercoat giving them a sleek appearance, and their coat feels like cashmere. It is also very water repellant.

Black-Footed Cat

""

Source: https://bigcatrescue.org/

This little cat is Africa’s smallest feline, and probably the deadliest cat there is. No, not to humans, thank goodness. They are skilled hunters that prey on small rodents, birds, and others. They are about 14 to 20 inches long and weigh between 2 to 6 pounds. Not exactly a dangerous looking cat, but they hunt and bring down more prey in a single night than a leopard does in six months. But unlike other cats, they are poor climbers, and will avoid tree branches. They are highly unsociable, so if you want them as pets, socialize them at an early age.

Himalayan

""

Source: https://iheartcats.com/

The Himalayan prefers peace and quiet. Not recommended for homes with young kids, as kids can get rambunctious and noisy which will make the cat very aggressive and irritated. Other than that, they are normally calm and relaxed. They look like Persian cats, except for their blue eyes and point colouration. These were derived from crossing the Persian with a Siamese. They are good indoor cats that love to be petted and groomed. They are devoted and dependent upon their humans for companionship and protection.

Russian Blue

""

Source: https://www.hillspet.com/

Expensive and rare breed of cats, but temperamental as well. They are normally shy, aloof, and prefer to be left alone. If they want to mingle with their owners, they will do so at their own time. They are sensitive to human emotions as well. Children must be patient with this breed, they have to first be comfortable with a person before it will seek attention. They have bright green eyes, and short but thick fur that is bluish-grey. The feel of their coat is said to be softer than silk. They have few health problems, and are not prone to illness. They normally live to about 20 years, but some have been recorded living over 25 years.

British Longhair

""

Source: https://dnl7t01l0fo05.cloudfront.net/

These cats are especially dangerous for allergy sufferers. They have a high-maintenance coat that moults constantly and requires frequent grooming. People with even just a slight hint of allergy should stay away from this breed. Besides, they also are temperamental and moody. They don’t appreciate being held often. They are good around other animals, including dogs. They love to play and are generally peaceful. They descend from the British shorthair, that was interbred with longhair varieties like the Turkish Angora.

Somali

""

Source: https://cf.ltkcdn.net/

Known as the “monkeys” of the cat family. They love to hold objects with their front paws and are rather playful. However, they are not obedient and are very frustrating to try to train. Their lack of adaptability also makes them irritable and moody. They will not hesitate to bite or take a swipe at you, even if you are the one feeding them. They are recognized by their bushy tails (like a fox’s) and large almond eyes and pointed ears. They have a soft coat that is nice to touch. They need to have companions always, whether other cats or pets, or their humans. They get depressed easily if left alone.

Snowshoe

""

Source: https://i.pinimg.com/

Definitely cute and adorable, this breed has all white paws and blue eyes. But all looks and no brains can be a problem. They are very free-spirited and mischievous. They will not mind you, and if you insist on getting their attention, be prepared to get scratched or bitten. The word “no” is not in their vocabulary. Despite this, they enjoy the company of humans. They also enjoy water, and are fond of swimming. They have a fondness for perching in high places. Noticeably, they generally have a concerned and worried look about them, which adds to their cuteness their owners love.
