Regarded as one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse cities in America, with more than 145 different languages spoken, behind only New York and Los Angeles, Houston is the largest city in the Lone Star State and has the fourth largest population in the country. Known as the world capital of space exploration, hence the nickname “Space City,” it houses NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Popular celebrities such as Beyoncé, Hillary Duff, Jennifer Garner, and Kenny Rogers, among many others, call the city home, and most likely grew up on smoked briskets, Tex-Mex, kolache, crawfish, and rodeos. However, the city is also known for its punishing heat and humidity, as well as traffic, but if it is being called home by more than 2.3 million people, then it clearly has something to offer.

To make everything alright, alright, alright, and make the most out of your stay, don’t do the following things when visiting the city of Houston.

Don’t Forget To Touch The Moon

Houston is only a handful of places in the world where you can truly have an “out of this world experience.” Don’t pass on this when you visit the Starship Gallery at Space Center Houston. Although most of the moon rocks collected by the Apollo missions are preserved in a pure nitrogen environment at the Lunar Sample Laboratory Facility at Johnson Space Center, there are a few lunar rocks that can be touched by the general public. One of these is the lunar touchstone, which was brought back by the Apollo 17 crew in December of 1972. Taken from the Valley of Taurus-Littrow in the upper right quadrant of the moon as seen from our planet, this rock sample is reported to be 3.8 billion years old.

Don’t Think It’s Hot In Houston

""

Source: https://cdn.hpm.io/

It’s not hot in Houston. It’s awfully hot! With only about a couple or so months of nice and cold weather, be prepared for the stifling heat the rest of the year, especially in August. It is so hot that you need to have really good air-conditioning and insulation in your home, as well as in your car, especially if you park under the sun. Couple that with the high humidity that makes the heat worse, and you need to take showers every now and then to take the stickiness of the sweat off your body. Doesn’t matter if you’re under the shade, you have to accept the fact that you will be drenched in sweat each time you go outdoors. With that said, you need to be careful and acclimate yourself before engaging in strenuous activities outside.

Don’t Be Surprised About Floods

""

Source: https://image.cnbcfm.com/

A very humid climate and a flat terrain that’s barely above sea level on the banks of the Buffalo Bayou is the recipe for Houston being referred to as the nation’s “flood capital.” As such, no matter what season or month it is, don’t be surprised to see the streets of the Greater Houston area getting flooded compared to the rest of the nation. In fact, the streets are actually part of the flood control system as the rainwater is forced into it, before getting flushed to the bayous, and eventually out into Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. With recent Tropical Storm Imelda flooding several neighborhoods in the city in September, don’t be surprised if people develop antlophobia, which is the fear of floods.

Don’t Think You Can Get Quickly To Where You’re Going

""

Source: https://media.bizj.us/

Unless you’re traveling between 1AM to 3AM in the morning, don’t think that you can get quickly to wherever you’re going in the city due to the horrible traffic, with morning and evening rush hours even getting connected by noon rush hours in some places. Having the fourth largest population in the country doesn’t help, either. In addition, there seems to be some sort of construction or roadwork that is always happening which further adds to the congestion. As such, be prepared to give an allowance of at least half an hour to your travel time, if you’re driving. But if you’re taking public transportation, make sure to add a little bit more.

Don’t Get Ticketed In These Parking Areas

""

Source: https://s.hdnux.com/

Since you will most likely be renting a car when you go to Houston, make sure you know which areas you’re most likely to get a parking ticket so you’ll be more aware and avoid it. It has been reported that the city issues around 380 parking tickets per day. With that said, avoid parking in these areas as much as possible as your likelihood of getting a ticket increases here: Rice Village, particularly in the 2400 block of Dunstan; Bush Airport, mainly on Terminal Road; Hermann Park, which includes the loop road, museum circle, and Hermann Drive; Houston Municipal Court, mostly in the courthouse parking lot at 1400 Lubbock; the 700 block of La Branch; University of Houston-Downtown; the 1200 block of Polk; and the 1600 block of California, considered a hot zone for violations.

Don’t Take Hurricane Warnings Lightly

If you’re visiting the city between the months of June and November, make sure that you are prepared in case of a hurricane, especially in September where there’s an increase in hurricanes and tropical storms. Houston is not called the “flash-flood capital” of the nation for no reason so don’t underestimate or take hurricane warnings lightly especially if you’re not familiar with the areas that are more prone to flooding. You don’t want to get caught in one without important supplies like batteries, candles or flashlights, bottled water, and canned goods, among others. Take note that Tropical Storm Imelda, which hit the city last September, claimed at least 5 lives and caused catastrophic flooding and massive damage to properties in several areas.

Although Houston has some of the most diverse cuisines available for its residents, courtesy of the city having one of the most racially diverse population in the country, it is still known for the meat, with steakhouses and barbecue places in just about every corner. There are vegan restaurants, but they’re much fewer and far between, and with going from place to place one of the challenges due to the traffic, looking for one may not be the most enticing. Besides, Houston is known for the tacos, fajitas, crawfish, chicken-fried steak, barbecue brisket, and other mouth-watering meat dishes so be prepared for some meat sweat.

A community located south of Downtown Houston, Sunnyside has been reported as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country, with a violent crime rate of 91.27 per 1,000 residents. Houston has one of the most diverse populations in the country though Sunnyside residents are predominantly black, being the oldest African American community on Houston’s south side, and they have a 1 in 11 chance of becoming a victim. There has been a lot of reported gang-related activity and car theft in the area, with a number of deaths reported in the past months, most likely resulting from gang wars that have spread in the area. As such, be wary when going to this area, especially at night.

With over 123,000 people in the waiting list to receive an organ in the United States, and more being added each day, it’s understandable that the organ trade has become a lucrative business, especially in the black market. If you are one of those who have heard that corneas are among the most common or most in-demand organs out there, fetching over $20,000 in the black market, bear in mind that selling, and buying, an organ is prohibited as stated in Chapter 48, section 2, of the Texas Penal Code. In the event that you need an organ to be transplanted, you can get one provided you only pay for the doctor’s fees.

Don’t Do More Than A Couple Of Garage Sales

Holding a garage sale is a smart way to get rid of old clothes, toys, furniture, or any other stuff you don’t need around the house while also making some money. However, the Limited Sales, Excise, and Use Tax Law dictates that you shouldn’t hold more than two garage sales per year as this is the limit in Houston, which follows the state law as the city itself has no specific ordinance. Given this, you will need to get a sales tax permit from the state if you plan on going over this number as you will be considered as operating a business. So, make you sure that everything goes when you hold these limited events.

Don’t Rely On Public Transportation

Source: https://s.hdnux.com/

It is said that Houston is built for driving. It is such a huge city that it will take you more time getting from point A to point B, not to mention the traffic, and the term “just around the corner” might well be paraphrased to “15 minutes away.” Although public transportation is available, such as the local bus system and the METRORail, you can’t say that public transportation is a popular choice unless it’s really suited for you. Don’t look for a subway, as there is none and though the METRORail is the fastest and widely used – reported to transport more than 55,000 passengers daily (no surprise there given the population), the range isn’t really that good and doesn’t cover much ground.

Don’t Forget To Always Carry An Insect Repellent

According to a couple of surveys, Houston belongs to the top ten cities with the worst mosquito problem so don’t forget to always arm yourself with insect repellent. With Houston somehow wanting to be like Miami with tropical-like climate but with exaggerated heat and humidity, and also seemingly turning into a swamp with standing water following heavy rainfall or flooding, the city becomes the perfect breeding ground for the most dangerous animal in the planet, which can spread diseases like malaria and the West Nile virus. Trucks roaming the street with bug spray might not be enough to curb these insects, so extra precaution needs to be taken just to be safe.

If you’re visiting Houston during the first half of the year, then you might just get to enjoy a Houstonian favorite: the crawfish. Crawfish season can fall between the months of January and July along the coast, depending on the weather. Whether you get to sample these critters in some of the city’s restaurants or get invited to someone’s backyard for a traditional “crawfish boil,” don’t waste the crawfish by discarding the head! This is a big no-no as every local knows that you should suck the head for in it resides the collection of the spices and as such, is the most flavorful part. However, don’t get too excited and make the mistake of inhaling deeply and get overwhelmed with the spices. To get the full experience, one must suck slowly, giving the head a little pinch to control the juices.

If that’s the case, we’re sure you’ll be bringing at least a couple of items with you like cameras, cellphones, and other personal effects that you always carry. However, don’t think that you can stuff these in a backpack or bag of any kind as these are not allowed. As a security measure, only clear plastic bags with a dimension not exceeding a foot in width or height is allowed in the arena.

With the most popular talents such as Jamie Barton, Tamara Wilson, and Ryan McKinny performing, as well as premiering the best opera productions such as Rigoletto and the coming El Milagro del Recuerdo, opera lovers are surely in for a memorable experience. However, it’s best not to bring the very young ones to the opera with you as this kind of entertainment may not be suited for them yet and with operas running for around three hours, they might get agitated and cause some distraction.

However, don’t think that you can enjoy all these and everything else that the center has to offer while wearing a costume or a mask as these items are not allowed. The city was actually founded a few months later by investors and brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen on the land near the banks of Buffalo Bayou. They then named it Houston in honor of the president and general, and campaigned to have it assigned as the capital. With just about a dozen people residing at the beginning of 1837, it ballooned to around 1,500 by May. Now, it’s the fourth most populous city in the United States, with an estimated population of over 2.3 million.

Diehard fans of the 2017 World Series champions are allowed to bring video and still cameras to the stadium but don’t get too excited that you bring hoverboards or fireworks to the game as these are not allowed. The 2019 American League champion Astros may have fallen short this year, losing at the hands of the Washington Nationals, 4-3, but the Astros are favored to repeat as AL champions next year, and have an 18-to-1 odds for the World Series.

Although you may think that its top speed of 66 mph or 106 km/h is not that impressive, don’t underestimate it as it packs a wallop. As such, when taking a car, don’t drive on the tracks, and definitely don’t try running a red light as it has quite a history of accidents and crashes. In fact, it even averaged six crashes per month at a certain point, which is 20 times worse compared to the national average, with most crashes resulting from drivers turning into the trains or running the red light, leading people to call it the “Wham Bam tram” and “Danger Train.”

However, don’t think you can get Limburger cheese on a Sunday, as the stinkiest cheese in the world cannot be sold on this day. Don’t worry as you will have a lot to choose from, from the traditional tacos to the trompo tacos in little shops, restaurants, or food trucks. Don’t think that this is an exaggeration, either, as it seems that all Houston natives have taken upon themselves to hate bad tacos. Likewise, whenever you’re in a Texas taco restaurant, don’t order a burrito as this is a dead giveaway that you are a tourist.

The phrase: “Houston, we have a problem” was delivered by Tom Hanks, who played the role of Jim Lovell in the popular 90s movie to alert NASA’s mission control of the situation. Don’t think that this is catchy or even funny, and say this out loud within earshot of Houstonians as not only has this become annoying over the years, but it’s also incorrect as it was reported to have gone on as “Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here.”

Although the brisket was said to have made the scene much later than sausages and ribs, it has become the king of Texas barbecue, and a culture in itself. Every barbecue joint has its own secret spice that distinguishes it from the others, and with the meat being smoked or cooked for over 12 hours, don’t make a travesty by drowning the meat with barbecue sauce, robbing the meat of its true flavor. Although the Dallas Cowboys are more than 20 years removed from their last Super Bowl win, this is still something that they rub on the faces of Houstonians when it comes to football. When it comes to water? How about that time when due to a drought, they would say that Houston residents are drinking their wastewater?
