He was an American Christian minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and champion of the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. King led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott which was a political and social protest campaign against the policy of racial segregation on the public transit system in Montgomery, Alabama. Aside from other protest movements, his famous “I Have a Dream” speech was on the 1963 March on Washington. In 1964, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. His death in 1968 sparked many riots in US cities. Many allegations surfaced that the man convicted of killing King, James Earl Ray, had been framed, or acted in concert with government agents. This continued for decades after the shooting. Ray died in prison in 1998 from hepatitis. The legacy of King remains with us today, as he is immortalized in the hearts of many Americans, as well as other nationalities who understand the struggle against racism, and the notion of civil rights. Long live the King.
