Texasmonthly

It seems natural when visiting a place, to want to try its beaches, lakes, or rivers. Most of us enjoy swimming, especially in a new place. As there are those who are better swimmers, there are also those who seem fearless. Some places are deemed dangerous for swimming, yet there are some adventurous but foolish people who dare go against the dangers. Be it rip currents, pollution, or dangerous creatures, when a place is not safe for swimmers, you should not try your luck. Don’t think you can impress others by being the fearless one. You most likely will also be the ignorant and foolish one. There have been many cases where fatalities occurred because they did not heed the warning signs. And some places don’t have warning signs, but your common sense will tell you that you should not swim there.

Check out some places you should not swim in:

The Boiling Lake Of Dominica

""

Elvis Adventure Tours

The name alone will tell you that it is unsafe for swimming. The Boiling Lake is on the island of Dominica. It is a flooded fumarole, located about 10 km from Dominica’s capital, Roseau, and is the second largest hot lake in the world. It is a World Heritage site, something visitors should go and see, but beware. The lake is a cauldron of bubbling greyish-blue water usually enveloped by a cloud of vapor. The water is so hot that you could boil an egg in less than 10 seconds, just imagine what it can do to you. In fact, the cardinal rule set by locals, is that tourists must go with a guide who knows the place really well. There is a trail, and you should keep to it and not stray from it. And, it is about a 3-hour walk each way, so those who tire easily should not bother going.

Bubbly Creek In Chicago

""

Chicago Tribune

This notorious stretch of the Chicago River is about 4.5 miles south of Downtown, past the Riverwalk, and away from the sightseeing boats. It is not really a creek, and you would not want to swim in it for sure. The stench alone should deter you as it is a depository for human and animal waste, blood, entrails, and meatpacking waste. It has been like this for decades at least. It “bubbles” from the decomposition of huge amounts of waste – a frothing pool of hydrogen sulfide gas and methane. Back in the day, it was the dumping ground for Chicago’s meatpacking industry. While some fish and plants thrive, it will not be safe for humans. Just imagine the diseases you can get if you even touched the water. If it smells like death, it probably can cause it.

Kipu Falls

""

Flickr

Kipu Falls in Hawaii may be the most deceiving scenic spot of the state. While it may look tranquil and refreshing, it is dangerous. It has a reputation for drowning deaths, and the company that owns the land where the falls are located decided to block the access route. Plus the strategic warning signs around make it evident that swimming is not allowed. It may be a beautiful, hidden place, but some things beautiful are quite deadly. There is some speculation that there is a powerful whirlpool underneath the sucks swimmers and drowns them. Still, several tourists opt to not follow the warning signs and take a swim. Not all have drowned, but ask yourself, are you feeling lucky?

Queensland, Australia

""

Viago

Australia has many amazing beaches. It is where the Great Barrier Reef is located, and the popular Gold Coast. This is what attracts many tourists to Queensland, Australia. But not many realize that Queensland is home to one of the deadliest sea creatures on the planet – the Box Jellyfish. Those who are not aware that the venom of this sea creature kills lots of unsuspecting swimmers and divers may think it to be harmless and even try to handle it. That is, if they even see this tiny killer. But the more fearsome one is the bigger species of box jellyfish, the Chironex fleckeri, which can reach 20cm along each side, and tentacles reaching 3 meters in length. But, the small, thumbnail-sized species killed more humans since it is not easily detectable. Either one of the species are on the top most dangerous creatures on the planet, so beware. It may prove to be your last swim.

South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach

""

Fashionsweek

It may not have the box jellyfish in its waters, but it is probably even more dangerous for swimmers. Before taking a dip in this beach, know that Myrtle Beach has some of the strongest and most dangerous rip currents in America. There are warning signs around, so don’t take this lightly. Even champion swimmers are no match for the rip currents, especially if they fight against it. The best and safest way to handle a rip current is to go with the flow. Hopefully it will take you back to the surface, most likely about 400 to 500 meters from the shore. You may survive, if you can hold your breath long enough. But panic always gets the better of us, and sadly, a lot have perished. Best to just enjoy the beach on the sand.

Chowpatty Beach, India

""

jdmagicbox

This beach in India may not have the box jellyfish of Australia, or the rip currents of America, but it is the most polluted beach in the world. Years upon years of abuse by visitors have made the beach as horrible as it is today, yet locals still frequent the place. We suppose if that is the only beach near them, it will still attract locals. Besides, they may gotten used to the stench, but surely not the diseases that could infect them. As a visitor, you wouldn’t even want to go as near as 100 yards from this place. Industrial waste has also infected this beach, as if it was an approved dumping site. The fecal bacteria level in the water was 1455/100ml, much higher than the tolerable 500/100ml. And that was years ago.

Lamu Island Beach, Kenya

""

CNN

A beach area with a different kind of danger – fellow humans. The waters of this beach are ruled by pirates (really?). It is only about 100 km from Somalia, and the Al-Shabab terror group has completely destroyed the economy of this once tourist area. Somalian pirates are notorious for hijacking ships and kidnapping people for ransom. Many visitors of this island beach have been captured, and some have never made it back home alive, particularly if the ransom was not paid. Even the authorities are powerless to stop the Somalian pirates. So unless you can bring your own private army to protect you, don’t swim in this beach.

The Gulf Of Mexico

""

carillon-beach

This used to be an ideal place for diving, fishing, and even swimming. One reason was that poisonous sea snakes aren’t supposed to be found in Gulf waters. But now,it seems these snakes have ignored the travel ban to the Gulf. There have been many surprised sightings of sea snakes near Texas, which borders the Gulf on the north, with Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida. Maybe due to climate change, but the sea snakes are here to stay. Another danger is the constant red tide issue, which can cause respiratory problems for humans. Dumping of some toxic waste was also an issue, but authorities have said that it has been since resolved. Still, you don’t know what mutants lurk beneath the waves.

The Nile River

""

Cloudfront

The Nile is an extensive river system that runs through Egypt, connecting to the Middle East, Africa, and the Mediterrenean. It is known to be where ancient civilizations started. While it was a giver of life, it also is a giver of death. Even as a lot of sewage pours into the river from Egypt, what makes it more deadly are ferocious Nile crocodiles. These predators rule the waters, and have been known for several fatalities, unlucky people swimming, fishing, or just trying to cross the river. Surely the river also carries a lot of diseases due to the pollution, and there are other deadly creatures that may be in the area. So there are a lot of things going against taking a dip in the river. Hopefully you are wise enough to avoid it.

Lake Karachay, Russia

""

Pinimg

Stay away from this place, you don’t even have to swim in it to die of toxic poisoning. It is considered one of the most dangerous places on the planet. Located in eastern Russia, in the southern Ural mountains, the lake was a dumping ground for the Soviet Union’s nuclear weapon facilities. It is contaminated with radioactive waste caused by accidents and disasters. And don’t expect to see any warning signs near the area either. The area should have been closed down by the Russian military. But then again, it is Russia. Just be sure not to go even 10 miles near the area. But that is your choice.

“Blood Lake”

""

Live Trading News

Rio Tinto is a Spanish lake that means “tinted river.” But many have translated it to mean “blood river” because of its blood-red color. It is located near an old mine, and chemicals from the mine spilled into the lake. It is a toxic mix of metal mining byproducts and acid-drain offs. It is toxic to humans, but the lake does support some life forms – bacteria. It has attracted lots of scientists who keep doing tests of the water. But they dare not test it for a swim. So maybe you shouldn’t either.

Citarum River, Indonesia

""

Beritasatu

The Citarum River is the longest and largest river in West Java, Indonesia, and 3rd longest in Java.It may be the most polluted river in Asia, with industrial and household waste. There are about 5 million people that live along the river, and they rely on the water for many reasons. But they are not educated on environmental protection and proper waste disposal. It is also filled with plastics of all sorts, and other debris. It may even be the most polluted river in the world. If nothing is done about it, it will turn into a wasteland, and the people who live in the basin will surely remain unhealthy, or even die.

The UK’s Blue Lagoon

""

Dailymail

Those who remember the 1980 film starring Brooke Shields and Chris Atkins marooned on a tropical island paradise may think this Blue Lagoon is also a paradise. The UK’s Buxton Derbyshire Blue Lagoon may look beautiful and pristine, but it has such a high pH level that it would be like swimming in bleach. Looks can be deceiving. The UK government has deemed this a dangerous place, yet many still flock to this toxic lagoon. Well, they figured that if the warning signs would not work, something else had to be done. So, the government dyed the water black, and it looks like a horror story instead of a paradise. Well, it should keep the people away, the lagoon also has garbage, waste, dead animals, and metal debris. Still, if there are ignorant people who still want to risk their health, there is really nothing else to do.

The Red Triangle

""

Coresites

This region in California is known as the playground of the great white sharks. Bolinas Beach is at the center of this shark infested area, and is not recommended for anyone to enter the waters. It begins around Bodega Bay and stretches out south, close to 50 miles west of San Francisco. The triangle is known to be the area in the US where 38% of shark attacks happen, particularly from great whites. Researchers believe it is because it is a food mecca for the sharks, with an endless food supply available. Sea lions, elephant seals, harbor seals, otters, and occasionally, humans. So if you want to enjoy the California sun, sand, and sea, this is not the place to be.

Reunion Island, Madagascar

""

blogspot

Speaking about sharks, welcome to the shark capital of the world. More than 50 attacks on people have already been recorded in 2019 alone. Even if you aren’t afraid of sharks, you still could end up on the menu on this island. It used to be a surf paradise, until surfers realized it just wasn’t worth it. Surf shops have closed, resorts are empty, it looks like a ghost town. And, it is forbidden to surf there. Still, there are some who dare surf illegally. Well if the sharks don’t get them, the authorities will. Seems it really is not worth it.

Jacob’s Well

""

Pandotrip

South-central Texas has an attraction that gets mixed reviews. Some consider it an awesome waterhole for good, clean fun. Others consider it a cursed place that lures the unaware. This is Jacob’s Well, a perennial karstic spring flowing from the bed of Cypress Creek. It has clear water that allows you to see into the large manhole inside, and is a popular local swimming spot. However, several deaths have been recorded since 1964. Most were novice open-water divers, as the manhole can go down to 120 feet deep, but has many tunnels and silted chambers. It attracts cave divers who want to explore the chambers and tunnels. Locals enjoy a dip in this waterhole, but the wise stay close to the surface. The deep lures the adventurous, and the foolish. So swim in it if you want, just don’t be one of the foolish.

The Amazon Basin

""

Forbes

South America has some of the best natural wonders and mysterious lands. It attracts different kinds of people, from professionals on a mission, to tourists on an adventure. The Amazon Basin attracts its share of adventurers. But those in the know understand that it houses some of the most dangerous predators in the world. Aside from poisonous insects, snakes, and the dreaded piranha, they also have a small fish that swims up your urinary tract and lays eggs in your bladder. Painful and damaging. Not to mention the mosquitos that can carry malaria and yellow fever. So if you are the adventurer that likes a dare, it would be best to avoid this place. There are other places that offer excitement without too much danger.

Horseshoe Lake, California

""

Trekearth

California has many awesome lakes that you could enjoy a dip in. But Horseshoe Lake is definitely not one of them. It may look calm and serene, but its waters are dangerous. It is full of carbon dioxide and other gases from the magma beneath. Looks like a great outdoor place for an outing – sandy beaches, scenic trails, picnic areas, etc. Just don’t get in the water. You will notice over a hundred acres of dead trees killed by gases sweeping from the magma underneath. The levels of toxicity of the gases fluctuates, but do you want to risk it?

Lake Victoria, Africa

""

Africafreak

This is the largest lake in Africa, and the chief reservoir of the Nile. It definitely is a tourist attraction, and many visit the lake to admire its awesomeness. While it is a beautiful sight, people are advised not to swim in the lake. First of all, just like the Nile, there are crocodiles. At least 15 people have been killed by crocs since 2013. Secondly, parts of the lake have been known to have extreme weather systems. Even boats have been capsized by sudden strong winds, heavy downpour, and strong currents. To date, over 5,000 people have been killed by the enchanting lake. Just something you should know when visiting Lake Victoria.

Strid River, England

""

Sunnyskyz

The Strid River in the middle of Yorkshire is a lovely place to go for a walk and commune with nature. It is an amazing countryside, but don’t let the seemingly calm waters fool you. Swimming here is dangerous, there is a strong underwater current that can drown even champion swimmers. Plus there are jagged rocks, and the rapids are violent. You don’t want to bounce off these rocks for sure. Several people have died in this river, some of them children. Admire the river from the banks, it is much safer. Besides, the water surely is cold, so stay warm and safe on land.

The Blue Lake

""

Pinimg

This mysterious lake is in Russia, Kabardino-Balkaria to be precise. One would easily be repulsed by the smell of sulphur, it is full of hydrogen sulfide. Locals know to avoid the waters, it is uninhabited by sea life. But you never really know what monsters lie in the deep. What is mysterious also is that the water does not change in temperature, no matter what the weather is like. Only the foolish would swim here, and yes, most of them are tourists. Locals have their myths and theories about the lake. Whatever it is, it is surely bad luck for you if you dare swim in it.

The Berkeley Pit

Located in Butte, Montana, it used to be an open pit copper mine. It is 1 mile long by ½ mile wide, and is about 1,780 feet deep. It is filled to a depth of 900 feet with water, which is heavily acidic, and contains arsenic. It was not always toxic, it in fact was called the “richest hill in the world”, giving around a billion tons of gold, silver, and copper ore. After the pit exhausted all its valuable minerals, it was abandoned, and rain filled it up to 900 feet (pumps were used so it won’t overflow). Some people have taken a dip in the pit, and ended up being hospitalized. What were they thinking?

North Sentinel Island Beach, India

National Geographic

Beautiful and pristine remote island, one of almost 300 in the Bay of Bengal. But, beware, you are not welcome here! A tribe of indigenous people inhabit this island, the Sentinelese, and they don’t like strangers. They are oblivious to the ways of the world, are in fact primitive in their ways, but that’s about all that is known of them. Visitors have been killed once they get near. A plane of photographers that passed by for a closer look was riddled with over 100 arrows. Why the Indian military has not addressed this problem is not understood. There are many places in the world that are dangerous, especially for those who don’t know about them.
