As they say, a picture paints a thousand words and it is without a doubt that these photos from the past are a veritable storybook of what life was like. When we look back on life, especially the life captured in pictures, there are moments of lucidity and clarity. Moments when we see the celebrities and big stars of a bygone era acting like normal people, off the record yet still on camera. These candid moments and snapshots of what life was like before help us to remember that no matter what happens in life, we are all just human beings who are searching for a connection.

A Lovely Parisian Garden

""

Cloudfront

This is a photo of a woman sitting in her garden, with two or three fully grown cannabis plants right next to her, her cool cat, and a bird. Shot and developed in 1910, this photo was taken right around the time where home aviaries and gardens were considered signs of affluence. The cannabis plants might have been just another garden plant, or maybe she and her family were using the medicinal properties of the plant to treat certain ailments. Either way, it is a far cry from today, where the cultivation, sale, and possession of cannabis for medicinal and recreational purposes are illegal in France. This creates a cognitive dissonance of sorts, as cannabis is widely used amongst locals in France, and the locals are believed to be rather tolerant of it. Possession of cannabis is illegal, because there is no difference between cannabis and any other drug, and France is known for having one of the harshest drug policies in Europe.

This is a watch that survived the Hiroshima bombing, and perhaps the only one that is still readable after having its hands blown off. The watch stopped at 8:15am on 6 August 1945, when the bomb dropped on the city. The watch belongs to a survivor Shinji Mikamo, who in 2015 was still living in Hiroshima. It had been given to his grandfather, for this work as a photographer who took portraits of the Emperor. In 1955, the watch was donated to the new Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. In 1989, Shinji Mikamo’s daughter Akiko moved to the US to complete her graduate work in psychology, and she went straight to UN headquarters to visit the watch. The tour guide was excited to show it to her, she said, but by the time they got to the display, the only thing she saw was a label describing the watch. The watch itself was gone. It took the UN four months to report the loss to the media, and to issue a letter of apology to Shinji Mikamo and to Japanese authorities. 31 years later, nobody seems to remember anything about the watch — but some people suspect that it may have been part of a crime ring organized inside the UN. A year and a half before the watch was stolen, a silver coffee urn and two 21-karat gold bottles containing a rare perfume, all of which were a gift to the UN from the Kingdom of Oman, were stolen from a glass case just yards from the Security Council chamber.

Sergeant Praytor and Miss Hap

""

Cloudfront

This is a photo of Marine Sergeant Frank Praytor feeding an orphan kitten in the middle of the Korean War. He adopted the two-week-old kitten and gave her the name “Miss Hap” because she was born at the wrong place at the wrong time. It was circulated at the time that her mother was killed by a mortar barrage near Bunker Hill but Praytor, in a 2009 article for the publications The Graybeards (which is the official publication of the Korean War Veteran’s Association), said that Miss Hap’s mother was shot by a Marine up the line because of her yowling. Since that would have caused negative reactions, the Corps publicity told the mortar barrage story instead. Miss Hap was one of two surviving kittens; Praytor took care of her, while the other was given to another man who rolled over in his sleep and accidentally suffocated the two-week old kitten. The photo above shows Praytor feeding Miss Hap slightly watered-down canned milk with a medicine dropper. It was circulated and published in more than 1700 American newspapers in 1953, including the New York Times. After Sergeant Praytor went home, Miss Hap was left in Korea, and became a mascot in the Division PIO office. Praytor even saw her one more time when he returned to Korea briefly, and she was under the care of Cpl. Conrad Fisher of Cicero, Illinois. He likes to think that Fisher was able to take her home with him to the US.

This is a picture of Janis Joplin, standing in her apartment near Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. Joplin died of a heroin overdose on 4 October 1970, when she was 27 years old. Joplin is part of what is known as the 27 Club, which includes popular musicians, artists, actors, and athletes who have died at age 27. Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 between 1969 and 1971; Kurt Cobain died in 1994 from suicide at age 27; and the blues musician Robert Johnson, who died in 1938, is the earliest popular musician who is included in the members of the 27 Club. Seventeen years after Cobain’s death, singer Amy Winehouse died at the age of 27, three years after she expressed a fear of dying at that age. Television actor Jonathan Brandis died of suicide in 2003 at the age of 27, and Anton Yelchin from the Star Trek franchise died at the age of 27 in a car crash.

It was her first appearance in a game show, and while she did not make it onstage, the clip of her running to Contestants Row was rebroadcast as part of The Price is Right 25th Anniversary Special in August of 1996. After Wheel of Fortune hostess Susan Stafford left in October 1982, White was selected as one of three substitute hostess to co-host the show. Two months later, she became the regular hostess and signed on to host the show until 2022. White was presented with a Guiness World Record certificate for “Most Frequent Clapper”, and it was estimated that she clapped at least 3,480,864 times across the show’s 30 seasons.

""

Cloudfront

This is an ad from 1964 by General Electric, introducing their Simultaneous Duplex Mobile Telephone which was marketed as a huge improvement over the current Mobile Telephone service at the time. The main selling point was that the Simultaneous Duplex Mobile Telephone (and no, we don’t know why it is Simultaneously a Duplex) allowed users to connect to the person they were calling directly, instead of having to go through a switchboard operator. While the ad claims that the caller can place and receive calls from anywhere in the world, it is more likely that the wireless system acted like a CB radio, allowing you to place “calls” anywhere in the five-mile radius.

The next year was their historic visit to the US, where crowds of screaming teenage fans were waiting for them to arrive, the moment their plane touched down. In the show, DeGeneres inadvertently announces that she is gay over the airport PA system. In real life, DeGeneres went on Oprah to discuss her decision to come out in such a public way — and it has given hope to millions of people in the LGTBQIA+ community the world over. DeGeneres is now one of the longest running daytime show hosts, though she is currently in hot water for alleged “mean” behavior behind the scenes of her beloved show. Stories of her being unreasonable and generally a horrible human being are circulating on Twitter, with comedian Kevin Porter matching every tweet with $2 the the LA Food Bank. At the time an article for the Indepedent was published, Porter had paid $600 to the Food Bank. Perhaps someone should remind Ellen to be kind to people — but if nobody gets around to doing so to one of the most powerful people in Hollywood, at least Porter’s donations to the Food Bank will help a lot of people out.

This is a photo of average, everyday women in New York in the 1950s. New York is the top fashion capital of the world; a fashion capital is a city which has major influence on international fashion trends. Throughout the 20th century, New York rose in stature as a fashion capital, challenging the dominance of Paris with a different approach to fashion, popularizing sportswear especially in the 1940s and 1950s. These well-dressed women seen in this picture reflect a complicated mix of conservatism and glamor. American women, as a whole group who lived through the Great Depression and World War II, saw the 50s as the chance to afford new styles and bold choices, all accentuating the much-coveted hourglass figure — the sign of health after such war-torn and economically unstable times.

This is a photo of a woman on a longboard in 1967. However, many thousands of years ago that it actually happened, it is generally agreed that the Polynesian culture was the first to create boards from wood to move across the waves. The first version of the modern longboard was known as the olo board, and only the ruling class rode them. Longboard surfing is different from shortboard surfing because you need to walk up and down the board in order to maintain its balance and to help maneuver it, rather than ripping out a turn on a shortboard. The shortboard is harder to learn for beginners than the longboard because of the intense physicality required, however the longboard is considered by many surfers to be more satisfying to surf with, in the long run.

It saw its heyday in the 1970s when disco and roller disco became popular around America, as well as in the 1990s when inline skates, also known as rollerblades, became popular again due to the cultural touchpoints at the time of street culture, ice skating, and hockey. This is a photo of Carly Simon, the singer of the iconic song, “You’re So Vain”, which was a number one hit in 1973. The song earned Simon a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year, Record of the year, and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Female Artist. The reason why everyone loved this song was because there was an allusion to who the song was really about, although it was never really said outright during the height of its fame. Over the years, fans speculated that Simon’s self-centered narcissistic ex was none other than actor Warren Beatty, and Simon confirmed that at least one of the verses is about him. “You’re so Vain” was popular in the same way that Taylor Swift’s songs about her breakups are popular — you want the dish on famous people, so you listen to the song.
