Awesome Jelly

The world has definitely changed over the years, and so has parenting. Just ask today’s helicopter moms what they think about the way their parents raised them. Gone are the days when kids actually wanted to play outside, riding their bikes until it was dark with no way for their parents to know if they were alive until they made it back home for dinnertime. And all that old school parenting didn’t stop there either. There were no car seats, seatbelts were optional, and kids learned to swim by falling into a pool.

If your kids don’t believe you, then take them on a trip down memory lane by showing them these old-school parenting photos that would never fly today.

Who Needs a Seatbelt When Mom’s Arm Is There?

""

Dad Patrol

Just in case you weren’t exactly sure, yes, this mom and daughter duo are sitting high above the ground in a chairlift with nothing else by mom’s arm to keep her daughter from falling to her death. Never mind that chances are the mom will go down right after her, of course. Back in the day, mom’s arm was around for all seatbelt purposes like riding in the car, riding on the bus, basically anything that would cause a kid to fly out of their seat. These days, even though there’s an actual seatbelt required by law in all of these things, the mom arm is still a thing because that’s just basic mother’s instinct.

Car-Seat No-Go

""

Dad Patrol

There are just so many things wrong with this photograph. Aside from the baby being strapped in the front seat of the car, the fact that his car seat is basically some metal pole with a fake wheel that makes him feel he’s driving totally takes the cake. Not only is this adorable little boy not strapped in period, if this car actually got into an accident, he’d either hit his head on his plastic steering wheel, fly straight into the windshield, or both. Hey, at least he’s learning how to drive already.

Cliffhanger On Daddy-O

""

Dad Patrol

Rock climbing isn’t anything new, nor is bringing your kid on a climb. But this father daughter duo is hanging off a deadly mountainside without any true safety net. These days, if your parents tried to do this, they’d find themselves in a custody battle with the law! This particular photo was posted by Reddit user middle_angel21, who happened to be “strapped” onto her dad’s back with some very thin rope and the strength of her own arms. This might have bode well in the good ‘ol days but no way would any child be allowed to drape over her dad’s back like a koala while he climbed some mountain. At least we know this little girl lived to tell the tale!

Bring Baby To Work Day

""

Dad Patrol

There was a time when parents didn’t need to worry about hiring a baby sitter, or get annoyed at the fact that their office didn’t offer daycare, because they could just bring their babies to work! Here we see what appears to be an adorable tot having a nap, in his mom’s desk drawer too! What seems to be a filing cabinet meant for well… files, also served as a comfy baby bed to leave a sleeping baby while mommy was busy at her desk. She could even simply close the drawer when it was convenient to let her baby suffocate… REST… we mean rest.

Old-School Vet

""

Dad Patrol

This veterinarian mom had no qualms about bringing her young son with her to work. But then again, this photo was from 1959 before all the safety restrictions and parenting guides started making parents feel totally inadequate. While this mom is holding on to this lion cub like it was the sweetest thing, her son was probably thinking about how cool it was that his mom allowed him to play with wild animals because heck, so did she! Even crazier, this family kept this lion as their house pet for two years! Of course he eventually had to move out because, well, he’s a lion.

MarioKart Prototype Perhaps?

""

Dad Patrol

These days, toy cars for kids come with a ton of safety measures including a remote control for parents to make sure that they can still control their kids while driving. But back in the day, this type of go-kart not only lacked any kind of parental controls, but there was no seatbelt or rules about how many could ride it at once, even if that included a baby! For reddit user Morghani, he shared a photo of his 1993 birthday present that definitely made its way around the block or two. And even if he swore he only drove 5 mph when his baby sister was with him, no one really believes him, including his parents.

Future Winemaker One Day

""

Dad Patrol

Back in the day, although kids weren’t allowed to drink alcohol, they were allowed to help make it! Here’s a photo of this little girl crushing grapes from the family vineyard in order to help make some wine, even taking a photo to commemorate the moment. These days, the law is so strict that parents can get in to trouble if they allow their kids to get involved with alcohol, even if they aren’t exactly drinking it! This is just another photo that proves that the 90s were way cooler than now!

When Your Mom’s Favorite Kid

""

Dad Patrol

From this photo alone, it’s obvious that parenting was totally different back then. Not only is this mom allowing her young child to jump ramps, but her son is practically naked with no helmet, using what looks like a pair of leather shoes rather than rubber ones. Plus she made herself into a human ramp just so that her son could practice his bike jumping skills. If we didn’t know any better, then we’d think that this was Evil Knievel doing practice rounds while mom happily cheered him on, and got crushed.

Who Needs Protection With All That Hair?

""

Dad Patrol

Skating is a hobby that is just as popular today as it was back in the 70s when skaters and skater parks gained a major following. This teen is obviously a gifted skater, considering that he doesn’t have a single scratch on him despite the incredibly compromising position he’s in. This is just another example of how different parenting is these days, cos he hardly has a stitch of clothing on him, what more protective gear. Of course nowadays, before any kid can even get on a skateboard, aside from actually wearing shoes, they’ll be covered in elbow pads, knee pads, and a helmet at least.

Baby Sling Shot

""

Dad Patrol

What kid didn’t love to stand in between his or her parents while holding one hand each and swinging happily? Apparently, this couple decided to think out of the box and make their tiny baby a swing as they skated on an actual ice rink. Despite wanting to be hands free, these parents were mighty confident that they weren’t going to allow their precious child to swing around and fall head first into the ice. While this might have been the beginnings of all those baby wearing products that are so popular on the market, there’s no way this one would have ever made in past the design phase.

When Being 16-Years Old Was the Same as 21

""

Dad Patrol

Back in the day, parents used to let their kids pretty much do whatever they wanted, even if that meant allowing a 16-year old to drive around on a motorcycle sans helmet, while discovering Bali at that! This dude not only managed to travel half way across the globe without his parents, but he rented a bike, didn’t bother with protection, and basically did a whole fly by night trip despite not even being of legal age. If teenagers attempted to do the same nowadays, there’s no way they would even make it past airport security, what more onto an actual airplane.

When People Didn’t Care Whether Racoons Had Rabies or Not

""

Dad Patrol

Apparently back in the early 1920s, racoons were kept as pets. Wait, you mean these rabid, garbage-eating, sharp-clawed night critters aren’t meant to be domesticated? You could have fooled us! Someone must have forgotten to tell First Lady, Mrs. Coolidge, that rather than cuddle a pet raccoon named Rebecca, she should have just stuck to her dogs like the rest of the White House inhabitants. No matter how sweet this critter might have been, there’s no way a modern mom would collar, leash and carry a raccoon, what more let one near her kids.

Public Swimming Pool

""

Dad Patrol

Public swimming pools aren’t anything new, and most families spend a lot of warmer weather days in such places. This particular photograph though shows one in Detroit’s inner city in the 60s, where kids were taught how to swim with tons of parents watching from the sidelines. One Reddit user named ItsMinnieYall called this the “Swimmobile” where her mom used to go when she was a kid. But we bet that there was no way mommy ever brought her precious ItsMinnieYall to something like this. Heck, these types of mobile pools don’t even exist anymore!

When No One Cared About Second Hand Smoke

""

Dad Patrol

There was actually a time when cigarette smoking was considered totally normal and not harmful at all. In fact, no one even knew that smoking actually kills! Just look at this photo of none other than a young Robert De Niro back in the 40s being carried by his dad. Not only was he half-naked, but there was no way he wasn’t inhaling all those toxic cigarette fumes rising from daddy’s cigarette. Good thing he came out totally fine when he grew up. But if De Niro attempted to do this with his own kid, there would be no way anyone would have been so cool about it.

Real Life Baby Stocking Stuffer

""

Dad Patrol

So much has changed in the past decade, and parenting has probably changed the most. Back in the early 80s, one Reddit user named Nankie shared that this was how she used to hand over babies to their mommies at the hospital she worked at when they were born on Christmas eve. This might have been allowed back then, but no way would any hospital ever allow their nurses to wrap up a newborn and hand them over to the parents this way. We wish they would though because it would make every mom feel like she definitely made in onto the “nice” side of Santa’s list!

A Different Kind of Music Class

""

Dad Patrol

Parenting isn’t the only thing that was different back in the day. This photo is actually from a 1947 music class where the instructor is teaching kids how to play the piano. Unlike all the music classes these days that are mostly one on one, or at least with a teacher that looks at his students, one has to wonder how any of these kids even learned to play this way. Aside from having to watch a teacher from behind, their mini keyboards didn’t even have sound, which meant they couldn’t know if they were pressing the right keys or not.

When Picture Taking Was A Formal Event

""

Dad Patrol

Before cameras were built in to our mobile phones, taking photos used to be a formal event. From deciding on the background, choosing an outfit, and deciding how serious to be, it used to take some major considerations. One such reddit user, TheFlowerCannon retold the tale of how her 17-year old grandfather was born in Italy but migrated to the US in 1910 after being adopted with 10 other kids. And what was even more amazing was that he would receive gorgeous Italian clothes anonymously for quite a number of years after that too. At least he always had something to wear for his yearly photo, right?

Sure, Hand the Baby Some Fire

""

Dad Patrol

No matter what you say about sparklers, all those tiny sparks hurt! But then again, old school parenting was a big believer in cause in effect, never mind that this photograph shows a teeny tiny baby about to get the shock of his life. Aside from this young tot not having the best grip just yet, it should have also been wearing some protective goggles in case he decided to put the sparkler right up to his face. This is one baby that’s going to learn firsthand that fire is hot and sparklers aren’t always fun to play with. Hopefully this kid got his dad back when he was way older too.

Smokin’ Halloween Costume

""

Dad Patrol

In earlier years, parents used to make their kids’ Halloween costumes all the time. From garbage bag kids, to cereal boxes, to giant packs of cigarettes, mom’s believed that they were being totally crafty, never mind that they were actually super cheap and didn’t want to pay for actual costumes when they could make them from their household products. While kids dressing up like a pack of cigs was probably considered cool in the 50s, if a parent tried to do this now, all the “Karens” would be definitely be crying foul. These days, costumes are a dime a dozen but honestly, we kind of like all these crazy old school ones.

Roof Parties Were a Thing

""

Dad Patrol

Kids that throw house parties these days are constantly worried about the cops coming, and for good reason. But back in the day, kids couldn’t wait for their parents to take a weekend trip so they could open up their house, and their roofs, to hundreds of kids who were ready to get their drink on, never mind that it was illegal. This KnowYourRole96 Reddit user shared that his mom was one of the kids sitting on top of the roof at this 1976 fourth of July party. But we’re absolutely certain he was living vicariously through her because there would be no way she would ever let her kid throw a party in her house, unless she doesn’t mind going to jail.

When Baby Carrying and Chainsaw Using Was Totally Normal

""

Dad Patrol

One look at this photo and you’re probably wondering what’s wrong with it. But then a quick peek to the upper right and you’ll know exactly why stuff like this is illegal nowadays. This mom is busy handling a chainsaw while carrying her baby on her back. It might have been the only way to get things done before but we don’t want to think about the horror if that baby somehow managed to reach a chubby hand out too far or worse, fall off her mommy’s back and into the viscous killing machine. This is just one more example of how some forms of parenting have actually changed for the better.

No One Is Too Young for Ballet

""

Dad Patrol

There’s nothing quite as powerful as a mother’s love, no matter what might be in the way. This 1980s mommy is feeding her baby in between ballet scenes, which is truly a precious sight to behold. Of course one could also think that this poor mom didn’t even have a supportive husband willing to take care of their baby while mom was busy dancing. Thank goodness moms these days can tell their husbands exactly what they need, when they need it!

The Beauty of RV Living

""

Dad Patrol

If you’ve been inside an RV, then you know how many people can actually fit inside. Here’s one photo shared by Reddit user jaytheworst, whose family vacations involved parents, kids, and a giant RV with no seatbelts. Who cared that the kids could have totally flown through the top window and onto the road without their parents even noticing? Even if families still travel cross country up to today, there was no way they were as carefree or unsafe as this guy’s family was back in the 90s. At least he didn’t mention any fatalities when he talked about his trip!

If There’s A Will There’s A Way

""

Dad Patrol

Show a kid a photograph of a phonebooth and half the time they won’t know what it is, but there was a time when these were the most useful things on the streets, aside from traffic lights of course. Kids these days have no idea how easy they have it, considering they can call for help with a single tap of a finger. But back then, kids would do whatever they could to be able to make a phone call, who cares if he had to hang off the edge of a dirty booth. Of course this little boy had to inform his parents that he might get home late that day or else he might find himself hanging off his dad’s knee as soon as he made it through the front door.

What Every Birthday Boy Looked Like

""

Dad Patrol

Toys these days are so complicated, almost every single one comes with a user manual that parents need to figure out before their kids can play with them. Years before, toys were normally the type you’d just have to pull out of the box to start playing with them, maybe they’d come with a battery as well. Reddit user xDanSlo was given the Ghostbusters Ghost Trap in 1989, and if his face says anything, it’s that he was amazingly excited about it. We bet parents didn’t even have to proof the box and contents before little Dan started playing with it.

The Cool Kids

""

Dad Patrol

Biker gangs were a dime a dozen back in the day, and this kiddo looked like she meant business. With her mustard colored top, funky pants and brown leather bag, she must have been one of the popular kids that everyone wanted to be friends with. Apparently, it was her daughter, Reddit user faitswulff, that shared this photo of what a cool kid her mama was. Who knows what scared people more, her giant shades, her pigtails or the fact that she wasn’t wearing a helmet? It must have been fun to be a kid in the 70s.

Waiting For the Right Time to Make Her Escape

""

Dad Patrol

This adorable toddler looks like she’s ready to head out for a night on the town rather than go down to sleep for the night. But what did you expect from a 1966 mom who probably used way too much hairspray, even on her kid. Obviously this was way before anyone knew about how noxious the fumes were, causing anyone that got a whiff of it to have a coughing fit. How we wish there was a current photo of this little girl today, we’d love to see if her mom’s hair-spraying ways were too hard to quit.

Typical Garage Band

""

Dad Patrol

Too bad garage bands are a thing of the past, because some of the best sounds from the 70s, 80s and 90s were created precisely this way. Bands like The Who, The Kinks and The Troggs began their humble rise to fame in the confines of a small square box meant to house cars. Sadly kids these days won’t experience the crazy loud drums, the squeaky guitar solos and the loud out of tune singing. Thankfully though, they won’t have to experience all the mullets because that’s one hairstyle that no one should have ever had no matter how cool they thought they looked.

Life Father, Like Son

""

Dad Patrol

Parents love to remind us that they know best, and for once, they might have been right. Here’s one “like father, like son” photograph that’s completely adorable. Reddit user EvilFluffy87 decided to share this precious moment where he rocked his baby exactly like his dad rocked him. If this isn’t a classic tale of I told you so, then we don’t know what is. Parents these days buy into all the fancy toys, baby carriers, and other types of baby necessities thinking they’re doing the right thing but in the end, here’s proof that all baby needs is a parent’s unshakable love.

Before Electric Car Washes Were a Thing

""

Dad Patrol

If one thing hasn’t changed, it’s a boys lover for their toys. Kids grew up watching their dads taking extra good care of their cars, washing them, cleaning them, changing the oil and making sure they were spotless and perfectly tuned up. Unfortunately these days, kids are so spoiled they can drive their vehicle through a carwash and it will come out sparkling. But there’s no way that kids will be able to truly understand what it meant to truly treat their car like they would a lady.

Prom King

""

Dad Patrol

Prom has always been a huge thing, even back in the 70s when promposals weren’t a thing. There were no over the top ways that boys would ask their girlfriends to go to prom, they would just pop the question like they were asking where they want to eat. However, this photo shared by Reddit user AR3SIN said, “my dad before prom in the 70s. His brother is a professional photographer and got this legendary photo.” While it is pretty epic, this kind of “SR Prom or Bust!!” type of wedding theme photo would never make it onto anyone’s social media account.

Phone Home

""

Dad Patrol

Here’s one photo that shows a father’s ultimate sacrifice for his family, as well as a son’s love for his dad. While the dad is standing in his pilot uniform, looking sharp and ready for business, his son is staring up at him with obvious admiration. And what makes it even more adorable is that the young boy is wearing a pilot jacket of his very own. We’re almost certain that this young boy grew up to be just like his father and we hope that he had his own son to get a jacket for!

Old School Selfies

""

Dad Patrol

Whoever believes that they invented the selfie, they just might have a fight with this cute mom and son. Reddit user ent_hugger37 shared a photo of his dad sitting on the lap of his grandmother as they posed for a 1949 selfie of their own. Unlike current phones where photos can be automatically viewed, erased and retaken, this cute mother and son duo had to wait before they got a glimpse of their very shaky picture. It might not have made for the clearest of photos but we’re absolutely sure it’s made the best memories.

Who Says You Can’t Mix Work with Pleasure

""

Dad Patrol

Before the days of electric bikes and scooters, apparently some dads headed off to work using a trusty skateboard. And let’s face it, even the coolest skater dudes eventually had to grow up and make a living right? Just because they were forced to wear suits to the office and carry around a briefcase didn’t mean that they no longer liked skate boarding. You can try to take the skateboard out of the boy but apparently you can’t take the boy out of the skateboard. Let’s just hope this guy put his shoes in his briefcase.

Just Married!

""

Dad Patrol

Some parents were so incredibly strict with their kids, and one of their biggest worries is that their daughter will elope with some biker dude one day. This young girl not only rode off with a cruising, beer guzzling rider, but it looks like their wedding was nothing like her mom had dreamed about. Even though they lacked the usual formal setting for their marital celebration, at least the bride was wearing a white dress. The couple must have not cared too much about anything except getting the chance to ride off into the sunset together for their honeymoon, probably because the bride was just 16.

Pet Fox? Sure, Why Not?!

""

Dad Patrol

In case raccoons weren’t freaky enough in the early 1920s, this guy from the 80s decided that he was going to keep a fox as his pet. Despite how cute and furry they are, foxes aren’t exactly meant to be house pets, unless there’s some sort of mouse or cat infestation that you’d like to take care. This particular fox may be domesticated, considering it’s actually wearing a collar, but we’re pretty certain that no parent – nor law – will allow you to keep one in your house today.

Got Beer?

""

Buzznicked

Oh come on, admit it, you thought this photo of a mommy giving her baby a sip of beer is rather cute! This mom might have been caught red handed, but just because there’s proof that she handed her baby a can of Bud to enjoy doesn’t mean that other moms aren’t doing it too. Just as long as she doesn’t let him drink the whole thing, it must be okay right? But if this was done today, this mom will have to get ready for the barrage of social media bashing she would surely receive from everyone that came across it.

It’s Hoagie Time!

""

Buzznicked

This boy in 1958 looks rather pleased with himself. If he wasn’t about five years old, then anyone would be convinced that this boy was seriously loving life with his hoagie in his mouth and dangerously flammable Zippo in hand. He might not have gotten his cigar lit just yet but from the looks of it, he’s going to light it up soon enough. We just hope that he doesn’t smoke the pack of cigarettes in front of him right after.

Just A Boy and A Deadly Tiger

""

Buzznicked

This photograph shows a kid kneeling very close to an obviously distressed tiger, but I guess since someone is holding on to it with a very questionable chain, it must be safe right? This is yet another example of things that wouldn’t fly in today’s current times. Aside from PETA breathing down the neck of whatever animal facility this is for cruelty, parents would never let their defenseless child stay so near a wild tiger without any type of barrier stopping the tiger from mauling their young child. Oh wait, the sign behind says Thailand. Now we get it.

You’ll Know It When You See It

""

Buzznicked

This photo from 1954 shows a typical night of friends and family hanging out while having a few drinks and playing cards, nothing wrong with that right? Even Junior in the back there is joining in the fun, guzzling down what looks to be a bottle of whiskey. He must have taken quite a few sips already because his cheeks are already quite red! If kids attempted to do something like this today, they’d either get locked up in their rooms, since hitting your kids is no longer an option. You know this kid probably got slapped upside the head when daddyo noticed he only had half a bottle of booze left!

Cross Country Ride

""

Here’s another perfect example of driving that would never be permitted on the streets these days. This family of three don’t seem to understand any of the danger that they’re in! Not only is this bike probably meant for just two people at the most, these folks though to put their baby in the very front, which we’re hoping at least is strapped in to the seat somehow. Of course none of them are wearing helmets either, but neither parent looks fazed by this at all. We just hope that the glass barrier managed to protect the baby from flying pests at least.

Having a Smoke After a Long Day

Buzznicked

We don’t have enough information about this 1982 photograph to truly understand what it’s all about, but what we hope is happening here is that this father and son duo are dressed as each other for Halloween. From the curly hair to the blue jacket with name tag, and the cigarettes hanging from their lips, they are seriously two peas in a pod. While this is something that would be considered adorable back in the 80s, if any parent did this with their kids today, there’s no doubt in our minds that the parents would get major death stares from anyone that saw them.

You Mean Riding Bears Wasn’t Normal?

""

Buzznicked

All we know about this photo is that this little girl riding on the back of a grizzly bear is just two years old. The only way that this would be okay is if one, the bear is actually domesticated and living with their family. Or two, this family works in the circus and the bear is part of their act. Whatever the case may be, no circus that’s still allowed to set up their tents today would ever allow a tiny, helpless child sit on the back of a very unpredictable bear. And given this child’s face, it doesn’t look like she was too happy about it either.

Bar Mitzvah’s in the 80s

""

This hilarious photo was shared by the boy who was enjoying his Bar Mitzvah back in 1972. This kid has both his grandparents and his uncle looking over his shoulder as he checks out what’s probably the infamous centerfold bunny. Apparently back then, it was okay to give a 13-year old a Playboy magazine as a birthday gift while everyone stood around and looked at it too. Grandma doesn’t look too bothered by it, so why should anyone else be?

1955 Royals

""

Whoever believed that Germans are stiff never met these royals. Princess Yvonne and Prince Alexander knew exactly how to have a good time, never mind that they’re about eight and ten years old in this photo. While Prince Alexander enjoyed his spirits in a cup, while having a smoke at that, Princess Yvonne is just guzzling the bottle straight down without a second thought. It might have been 1955, but we’re pretty sure that even back then, serving alcohol and cigarettes to minors was never allowed, even if their parents ruled the country.

Up in the Club

Apparently this couple had no qualms about bringing their kid to the club, even if it meant they’re barely one-year old child was surrounding by alcohol, cigarettes and a menu that was definitely not kid-friendly. Dad might not have been so convinced that they weren’t going to get kicked out, but mom doesn’t seem to have a care in the world! And why not commemorate the moment with a lovely family photo? Of course if parents tried to do this today, they’d be faced with tons of dirty looks from every table in the joint.

Youngest Advocate for Marijuana Legalization

""

Buzznicked

This may not have been Woodstock, but it sure was close. Except rather than people coming together for three days of music, drugs and tons of mud from crazy rain, these folks are actually at a California Marijuana Initiative Rally that took place in 1972. Not only did they go to fight for weed to be legalized, but they brought their brand new baby with them to join the fight. Cannabis may be legal already in most places in the United States, but there is no way having a newborn baby at a rally, no matter how peaceful it is, would ever be okay.

Who Said Car Seats Didn’t Exist in the 50s?

""

Buzznicked

Back in 1958, parents believed that their precious little babies were actually safe riding upfront with them in their early versions of car seats. This little baby was riding beside mommy while strapped into his seat, but the problem was the seat wasn’t strapped into anything! Once again, this is where the infamous “mom arm” would do all the work, shooting out to block the baby from flying off the seat and straight into the windshield. This is a far cry from baby car seats now that not only go in the back, but has baby facing the opposite way too!

That’s How You Chug A Beer

Even though this photo looks like it’s way more vintage than its 1991 date, it’s proof that almost three decades ago, kids in Australia were just way more tough. Not only is this teeny tot chugging down his drink like he’s attempting to win a beer guzzling championship, but he even has a tiny baby crocodile in his hand. And don’t mind the pampers! This kid might not be potty trained just yet, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s obviously tough as nails!

What Moms Who Just Gave Birth Looked Like Before

""

Buzznicked

A netizen shared this photo of his lovely mom right after giving birth to his sister back in 1978. Aside from having that post-pregnancy glow and enjoying some roast chicken, the most notable thing is the lit cigarette she has in her hand. Moms these days are probably wondering why they don’t look this relaxed right after giving birth, and moreover, why can’t they have a smoke after giving birth to their child? Oh that’s right, because cigarettes are bad for you and no hospital in their right mind would ever allow smoking inside their premises anymore.

1930s Swimming Lessons

""

Buzznicked

We decided to end this gallery on a high note! And by that we mean these parents must have been majorly high to subject their kids to this kind of swimming lessons! This may have been all the way back in 1930, but we’re pretty sure that drowning your kids was still a crime, even though it was almost a century ago. This is one parenting trick that we’re glad never made it past the 30s. We don’t even want to consider how many kids were harmed in the making of this photo!
