Drinking 100% Orange Juice Has Some Unexpected Health Benefits

Researchers at Toronto Metropolitan University conducted a study to see just how healthy drinking 100% orange is. They wanted to compare drinking 100% orange juice versus other sugar sweetened beverages.

For the study 36 adults at normal weight were told to drink 100% orange juice, an orange drink or water before eating food. The experiment found that food and energy intake was lower in those who drank 100% orange juice, this compared to those who just drank an orange drink.

Those who drank 100% orange juice had a caloric compensation of 84% while those who drank an orange drink were at a negative 25%. Calorie compensation refers to adjusting the current meal’s energy content based on the energy content of the previous meal(s). – National Institute Of Health.

When it comes to appetite, there was no change in appetite no matter which drink was consumed. Blood glucose levels were lower in those who drank 100% orange juice however.

In the end, it seems that drinking 100% orange juice versus orange drinks resulted in higher caloric compensation, lower energy intake and lower glucose levels.
