Unlike most presidents in U.S. history who were fairly wealthy, Harry S. Truman had struggled with business ventures and never amassed much fortune. He was born in Lamar, Missouri and raised in his grandparents’ farm in Grandview. Truman worked many odd jobs before joining the army. He dropped out of business school to work as a timekeeper at a railroad company, took on a number of clerical jobs at a newspaper and a bank, and worked in his family’s farm before signing up for the war. When he returned home from World War I, he tried his hand at several business ventures, including a lead and zinc mine and a haberdashery that sold men’s clothing and accessories, but none proved successful long term, and he was left deeply in debt. He used the contacts he made while in service to launch his political career, but he ended up with his finances in terrible shape that the presidential salary had to be doubled to $100,000 while he was in office.
