Ground hornets can be scary little creatures to have around your property, especially if you like to enjoy time outside. One wrong step and you could upset the entire nest and they will attack with fury if bothered.

So how do you get rid of ground hornets? There are actually multiple ways that work quite well and in this article, we will go over those methods!

You can use insecticide sprays found at many box stores such as Home Depot or Walmart. Look for hornet and wasp killer sprays specifically designed for ground nests. These sprays often have long-range jets so you can keep a safe distance. Apply the spray at night when the hornets are less active, following the instructions on the label carefully. Wear protective clothing like long sleeves, pants, gloves, and goggles.

There is also a product called Insecticide dust that works quite well also. Dusts are another option for ground nests. Apply the dust around the entrance of the nest, following the product instructions. Hornets will track the dust into the nest, killing themselves and other hornets they come in contact with.

If you are looking for a more natural method to get rid of ground hornets, one of the best methods is super simple — soap and water! This is a simpler option for small nests. Mix dish soap with water and pour it directly into the nest entrance. The soap will disrupt the hornets’ pheromones and kill them on contact.

Diatomaceous Earth is another great all natural method. This powder is made from fossilized algae and dehydrates insects with its abrasive texture. Apply the powder around the nest entrance; hornets will pick it up on their bodies and eventually die.

When To Take Care Of The Problem

Locate the opening where hornets enter and leave the ground. This will help you target your treatment. Hornets are less active at night which will make it safer for you to approach the nest and attack! After you apply your method of treatment, leave the next alone. Let it sit for a few days to ensure all the hornets are eliminated.
