Christmas stockings gained popularity shortly after World War II and since then, the stocking stuffer game has only got better and better!

Let’s take a look at the different items/gifts people stuffed Christmas stockings with over the years.

1950

A single penny, a satsuma (sweet orange fruit, like a small orange), licorice, and sugar candies.

1960

Christmas stocking stuffers were off and running and during the 1960’s it was big business. Stockings were filled with Black Jacks, jelly candies, Parma Violets and this was the first year that Barbie and Action Figures found their way under the Christmas tree!

1970

One of the biggest stocking stuffers during the 1970s was the Rubik’s Cube! Various sweet candies were also super popular. Sherbet was super big in the 70s, so sherbet items like Refreshers, Sherbet Fountains, Dib Dabs and Flying Saucers were all among the most popular stocking stuffers. Under the tree, the Red Ryder BB Gun was a popular gift and that continued throughout the 80s too!

1980

Care Bears, My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch Kids, Nintendo were among the most popular items found under the tree during the 80s. The stocking game was one fire too! Vintage sweets, chocolates and action figures/dolls were popular too!

1990

Man oh man…this 90s were different times for sure! Under the tree there were Furbys, Gameboys and Tiger Electronic games were all super popular. Stockings were packed with Pogs, Pollypockets, candy canes and all sorts of chocolates and sweets!

Over the last 20 years, stocking stuffers have been out of control. Many stuffed with candy, gift cards, socks, underwear and deodorant are all popular nowadays.
