Wildlife photographer David Weiller was travelling in Malaysia when he came across and captured incredible high definition footage of a giant Brahmin moth (Brahmaea hearseyi) sitting calmly on a branch in Sabah, Borneo.

The moth features an incredibly detailed wing pattern that creates an optical illusion that a pair of tiger eyes are staring back at you.

This is Mother Nature’s way of creating the perfect defense mechanism allowing the Brahmin moth to ward off dangerous predators!

This 15cm moth has some of the most intricate ‘optical illusion’ wing patterns. The impressive fake ‘eye’ markings make it look like an owl or a tiger. The parallel fine lines are typical of the graphic patterns of the Family Brahmaeidae. These lines are wavy, broken, accentuated and cover a large part of the wing surface.
