If you’ve ever eaten asparagus, then you may have noticed a funky smell in your pee afterwards. You’re not imagining things. According to a 2016 study in the British Medical Journal, up to 40% of patients notice a change in their urine after eating it. Dr. Sherry Ross, who works as an obstetrician-gynecologist at the Providence St. John’s Health Center in California, shared that it isn’t just asparagus that makes your pee smelly. She said, “Certain foods like Brussel sprouts, onions, some spices, garlic, curry, salmon, alcohol and even coffee can change the smell.” Others also add that having a diet high in salt can also cause a change in the odor of your urine. So the next time you eat something on this list, try and see if you notice a change in your pee. All that worry about having stinky pee could really just be due to something you ate and nothing else.
