San Juan de Lurigancho Prison (Peru)

My Portfolio

Perhaps it’s not surprising to know that one of the most dangerous districts in Lima, Peru also has the biggest and most overcrowded prison in the country. A space built for just 2,500 prisoners, it houses almost 7,000, and only employ a reported 150 guards to man the place. With the guards basically manning the outside, the prison is virtually run by the prisoners themselves. Only the sex offenders are segregated, which means all the other inmates, from the most hardened and vicious to the petty criminals, are free to roam wherever they please. Corruption and extortion are widespread and so blatant that inmates with money can get their hands on pretty much anything, from cellphones and drugs, to guns, and even to prostitutes. Aside from the corruption, diseases like tuberculosis and HIV is also common, and with so many prisoners suffering from drug dependency and sharing needles, the disease easily spreads.
