Your ex hanging on to your personal belongings may mean he’s still trying to hang on to you. If he still has your copy of Paulo Coelho’s Eleven Minutes, your vinyl record of Queen’s Greatest Hits, or your bottle of L’Occitane Lavender perfume, it may be a sign that your ex treasures your things, and he feels closer to you with your stuff around him. If your ex isn’t willing to give you all your things back on the day you broke up, he’s likely hoping you’ll call him about your stuff in the near future, and he can use that as an opportunity to win you back. He might also be thinking you just need to take some time to cool off, but he expects you to get back together, so it’s not necessary for you to get your things.
