Painesville, Ohio, Judge Michael Cicconetti firmly believe that the punishment should fit the crime. Judge Cicconetti sees roughly 30 to 40 cases per day and each guilty verdict comes with a choice. You can either serve time in jail, or take an alternative punishment that fits the crime.

For instance, one 18-year-old girl stiffed a cab driver after taking a ride in his cab. The punishment, 30 days in jail or she could walk 30 miles. She chose to walk 30 miles.

One man was caught soliciting a prostitute, the punishment, receive jail time or dress up like a chicken and walk the city streets. A form of public humiliation that seems to work far better than sending criminals to jail.

The Judge believes that when criminals guilty of minor offenses are sent to jail, they only learn to become smarter, better criminals. By becoming a smarter criminal, the crimes they commit will only become greater, which in return will land them right back in his courtroom.

The funky punishments are proven to work as Judge Cicconetti’s percentage of repeat offenders in his courtroom is only at 10%, where as the national average is 75%.

There was one case however, that truly stood out for many. A woman was found guilty of animal abuse. She left her dog in a disgusting, filthy home for over a week. The dog was not taken care of, alone with no food or water. Her punishment, jail time, or go to the city dump and live like the dog she abandoned for 8 hours.  She chose the dump.

Check out the Judge in action below. Just think what would happen if more Judges took up this style of handing out sentences.
