A Maine man is lucky to be alive, after an out-of-control SUV nearly crushed him as he was pumping gas.

While pumping gas at a West Gardiner, Maine gas station, Joel Moran got the scare of a lifetime.

An SUV ran through an intersection at high speeds, clipping one car causing the SUV to lose control. Screeching sideways, the driver of the SUV slammed into he car that Moran was pumping gas into. A split second decision on Moran’s part, saved himself from being crushed between his car and the gas pump.

“I moved out of the way just in time,” said Joel Moran, West Gardiner.

“Not until I saw the video did I realize how close I was,” Moran said.

Moran said he was out running errands yesterday when he stopped at the Four Corners General Store to get gas just after noon.

The store’s surveillance video shows the driver of the dark SUV blow through the stop sign, police say.

Another SUV coming through the intersection clips the first vehicle and loses control.

“Out of the corner of my eye, I see the car screeching,” Moran said. “Screeching across the road where the tire marks are and then he tried to correct and just barreled towards here and I went like this, dropped it, and stepped like this about a foot and a half.”

The out-of-control SUV slammed his car up against the gas pump.

His step backward prevented him from being crushed.

“We can sit on the couch and yell at the TV and say, ‘Just get out of the way!’ well, wait until it happens to you and you’ll realize it’s not the easy to get out of the way,” he said.

Incredibly, no one involved in yesterday’s accident was hurt.

“I guess the word is blessed, and lucky that things didn’t end up worse,” he said.
