The diagnosis of viral gastroenteritis or stomach flu is still widely-based on the patient’s history and physical examination. Laboratory tests, while available, are limited in scope, only able to screen for rota- and noroviruses. Since these aren’t the only viruses known to cause abdominal symptoms, using laboratory screening tests for pathogens aren’t effective. Stool exams are also limited in scope since they can only be used to rule-out whether or not a patient is infected by bacteria or parasites. Stool tests will not be able to screen for other possible sources of infection.
