You might wonder why people, in the office or in school, seem to get an upset stomach almost immediately after a colleague first catches it. Quite a keen observation, we should say, because the stomach flu, or viral gastroenteritis, is indeed a very contagious disease, capable of spreading from one person to another.
People who contract the virus become infectious to others during two stages of the disease: first, during the onset of the disease (when they begin to feel symptoms), and second, a few days after recovery.
Stomach flu viruses are transmitted in any of the following ways: direct mouth contact, or contact with contaminated surfaces which include food, drinking vessels, drinking liquids, as well as body excrement such as vomitus and stool.
