Patient history and physical examination, as in the case of stomach flu, are also the main sources of information used to diagnose cases of food poisoning. However, unlike the stomach flu, stool exams offer a definitive diagnosis of bacterial gastroenteritis, as they are able to identify the exact organism responsible for the infection.
