Joplin is the largest city in Jasper County and the main hub of the three-county Joplin-Miami, Missouri-Oklahoma Metropolitan Area. After the catastrophic tornado that struck Joplin in May 2011, causing over 150 deaths and $2.8 billion worth of damages, the communities have rebuilt their city with the goal to come back stronger than before. Joplin is recovering and once again flourishing, helped by its position as a regional medical center, with major hospitals serving surrounding states.
Joplin’s top employers include the Freeman Health System, Con-way Truckload, Mercy Hospital Joplin, Joplin School District, and Eagle-Picher—hospitals, schools, and companies with over a thousand employees respectively. The city’s unemployment rate is also lower than the national average. While utilities and transportations costs might run higher than the national standard, housing-related expenses, food, groceries, and health care are considerably cheaper than the U.S. average.
