The city is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, making it an excellent site for the outdoorsy folk like hikers and mountain bikers. Even though Anniston wasn’t open for general settlement until 1883, being established only after the Civil War, it’s the first city in Alabama to enjoy the convenience of electricity and telephones.
