Originally known as Bronson after its founder Titus Bronson, the city was renamed Kalamazoo based on the river that passes through it. Kalamazoo is the major city of the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area and is a primary center of international pharmaceutical and life sciences.
