Although there are pet owners who have switched their pets to raw diets, it is still best to have the food cooked to kill any bacteria or parasite that can be present and harmful to the dog. Raw fish can hide parasites that can cause fatal diseases. Some examples are trout, shad, or sturgeon, which can have parasites that cause “fish poisoning,” with symptoms like fever, vomiting, and enlarged lymph nodes. In addition, many species of fish contain thiaminase, which is an enzyme that breaks down thiamine, making it useless, and leading to thiamine deficiency.
