One of the most famous features of the Playboy Mansion was The Grotto, an enclaved pool where the infamous sex parties happened during its heyday. With the mansion undergoing major renovation and repair, the waters of the famed grotto had been drained, along with everything that came with. Like what, you may ask? Well, just these tiny things called legionella pneumophila, which is the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease. Back in 2011, it was reported that more than 120 people showed symptoms of the disease after partying in the grotto’s waters, particularly in the whirlpool spa, during a DomainFest fundraiser. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health had to step in to determine the cause of this mini-outbreak.
