The Original Playboy Mansion

TTnotes

The Playboy Mansion in LA was not the original Playboy Mansion. Before Hefner bought the LA compound for a reported $1.1 million in 1971, he purchased his first Playboy headquarters in Chicago in 1959. It wasn’t nearly as big as the one in the West Coast, but Hef’s room in the Gold Coast mansion, which also served as his office, did have a 100-inch diameter motorized bed that vibrated and rotated. The $400,000 property also featured an indoor pool at the basement. Unlike the LA mansion, Bunnies living in the Chicago mansion at the time had to pay rent for $50 a month. But the rules were basically the same: No male visitors. They also can’t drink alcohol unless it was Hef who gave them the drink. The sign at the door should give you an idea on what goes on inside: Si Non Oscillas, Noli Tintinnare, Latin for “If you don’t swing, don’t ring.”
