Another common symptom of strep throat is difficulty in swallowing, no thanks to the pain caused by the swelling of the tonsils. Patients with Strep throat experience a tightening of the throat muscles which is a reaction to Streptococcus toxins.
Many Strep Throat patients feel a choking sensation on their throat, making eating, speaking and drinking a challenge. The feeling that something is stuck on their throats can also trigger the gag reflex, which in turn causes acid from the stomach to be rise, further irritating the affected area.
To help patients, easy-to-swallow foods such as broths and soups, can be given. These allow a patient to remain nourished without having to suffer the pain of swallowing. Applesauce, cooked cereal, mashed potatoes, soft fruits, yogurt and soft-cooked eggs are other examples of foods that are gentle on the throat. You can prepare food using a blender, pureeing them to make them easier to swallow. You can also give patients cold food such as sherbet, ice drops and the like which can soothe throat pain.
