Lozenges and Hard Candy

Lozenges and medicated candies are direct ways of delivering relief to the pain caused by Strep Throat. These hard “cough drops” are designed to dissolve slowly in the mouth, providing lubrication and comfort to irritated tissues affected by the Streptococcus bacteria. Typically, these contain an anesthetic to numb the swollen areas of the throat. Other ingredients commonly found in lozenges include eucalyptus oil, zinc gluconate glycine or pectin, which form a thin barrier on irritated tissues, protecting them from irritants.
Many children find these “treats” enjoyable, thanks to the different flavors they come in. Some come in lemon, strawberry or orange varieties, all of which either have menthol, peppermint or spearmint as active ingredients for throat relief. While kids might enjoy sucking on them, avoid giving lozenges to children 4-years-old and younger to prevent them from choking.
