Irritating substances can add more suffering to those already infected with Strep throat. Irritants such as cigarette smoke, spicy food, orange juice, chocolates and coffee, can make the swelling of the tonsils worse. Staying away from these while ill can speed up recovery and make patients feel more comfortable.
Other examples of throat irritants include fumes from paint, harsh cleaning products, alcohol, and nuts. All of these worsen things for patients, which is why they should be avoided while one is still sick. Instead, choose foods that can soothe the swelling and pain of the throat. Foods with soft textures such as flans, as well as cold treats like ice cream or frozen yogurt, will help a patient recover with less discomfort.
