Tonsilitis, or the swelling of a pair of tissue masses at the back of the throat, is a usual feature of Strep Throat. These structures, called tonsils, work as filters, helping the body’s immune system get rid of harmful substances and toxins that make their way into the blood. Because they become swollen during Strep infections, swallowing becomes unbearably painful, making it difficult for patients to talk or eat.
To relieve the pain caused by Strep Throat, doctors usually prescribe pain killers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, drugs found to be effective in treating mild to moderate pain from headaches, muscle aches, toothaches and fever.
While the giving of aspirin is okay in children above 3-years-old, you should use it with great caution. Kids and teenagers who have just suffered flu-like symptoms, especially after chickenpox, should NEVER be given aspirin. The drug has been connected to Reye’s syndrome which is a rare but deadly condition in children.
