Canadians might be really nice, but they aren’t stupid and never assume as much. If you happen to be crossing the border into Canada, you need to have all your proper travel documents, which includes your passport. Yes, you are entering a whole other country, so you’re going to need it even if your passport doesn’t require a visa.
