South Africa has at least eleven national languages, with Afrikaans being one of the most common ones. Back in the 1600s, the Dutch colonized Cape Town, and Afrikaans was developed because of this. But never assume that people won’t be able to understand you if you speak English. Most of them speak English very well, and they’ll probably be able to understand every word you say.
