Sometimes a person’s destiny goes a different path from what the person hopes for. Billie’s fate was to never see home again, though he did not know it then. As he was preparing to go home to Peggy, he got some distressful news. The ship that was scheduled to bring him home was overcrowded with wounded soldiers, there was no room even for one more person. Of course Billie did not complain, the wounded were the priority. So, he had to wait for the next boat, which was weeks away. Surely the thought of returning to surprise his wife kept him busy, to while the time away. But once again, his boat was again overcrowded and he was told to wait one more time. This was the game-changer in their story.
