Completing over a hundred successful missions, he had earned the distinguished Flying Cross award, along with 11 Oak leaf clusters and other medals. He was a hero, and in July of 1944, was promised a ticket home for his service. He would finally get back to his beloved Peggy. But, it did not happen. Fate would have other plans for him.
