For the American men drafted to serve in the war, the wives were helpless and could do nothing. It was their duty to serve their country, and nothing was above that. While the husbands were shipped off to Tallahassee, the wives were taken to a hotel, told to go home, and keep mum about where their husbands were headed. The wives did as they were told, what else could they do? Eventually, they received word one-by-one that their husbands arrived safely at their final destination. But it was different for Peggy.
