You’re entitled to at least one stowed bag during your flight, with some hefty fees for additional baggage. However, despite what the check in desk has told you all these years, the extra weight will hardly affect anything. While yes, flight crews need to calibrate the proper center of gravity of the plane for takeoff, most airlines have taken to using sandbags to even out the weight. While we don’t completely understand why they can’t just chuck out a sandbag or two in exchange for your luggage, we don’t make the rules.
